Dwayne Johnson Reflects on Black Adam, Comments on DCU

Dwayne Johnson, who plays Black Adam, isn’t upset that his character didn’t fundamentally alter the power structure of the DC Universe.

In the 2022 film, Dwayne Johnson plays Black Adam, a powerful antihero who awakens after being trapped for 5,000 years. Given incredible powers by ancient gods, he decides to deliver his own brand of justice to the present day. His forceful methods quickly draw the attention of the Justice Society, but even though he initially resists them, Black Adam ultimately joins forces with the superheroes to defeat an even greater threat – a destructive force that could wipe out the world.

Although Dwayne Johnson had hoped Black Adam would revitalize the DC Universe, the movie didn’t succeed. Its disappointing performance in theaters and negative reviews meant his plans, including a planned Superman and Black Adam team-up featuring Henry Cavill, won’t happen. Despite setting the stage for this crossover, the film ultimately failed to deliver the desired impact.

What did Dwayne Johnson have to say about his time in the DCEU?

I recently spoke with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson about his experience with DC, and he made it clear he genuinely enjoyed making ‘Black Adam.’ He had a blast bringing those characters to life and expanding that world. While things didn’t continue as planned, he holds no grudges and wishes DC Studios all the best as they move forward. It sounds like he’s ready to explore new opportunities, and that’s perfectly alright with him.

It appears Dwayne Johnson won’t be continuing his role as Black Adam in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, which is a fresh start for the superhero franchise. This reboot features a new Superman, played by David Corenswet, replacing Henry Cavill. Johnson seems to be shifting away from big-budget action movies, recently taking on a smaller, biographical film called The Smashing Machine, reminiscent of his earlier work in films like The Rundown and Gridiron Gang.

Dwayne Johnson has several exciting projects coming up. He’ll star in a new mafia film directed by Martin Scorsese, as well as “Lizard Music” with Benny Safdie, and the thriller “Breakthrough.” He’s already finished filming the live-action remake of Disney’s “Moana,” where he returns as Maui, and is starting work on a third “Jumanji” movie soon.

Black Adam is currently streaming on HBO Max.
