Dwayne Johnson Breaks Silence On Black Adam’s Failure & Potential DCU Return

It’s been over three years since Dwayne Johnson first played a superhero as Black Adam in the DC movie universe. Although the film aimed to revitalize the franchise, Johnson’s run as the character was brief.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson discussed the performance of his film Black Adam. He was asked if his experience playing a villain (“heel”) in wrestling helped him portray the character, and Johnson replied that it absolutely did. He explained that his time as a wrestling villain was similar to the journey of The Rock becoming an anti-hero.

Dwayne Johnson shared that he really enjoyed working on Black Adam, saying the experience was fun and he loved developing the characters and introducing new ones to that world. However, with James Gunn now leading the new DC Universe at DC Studios, Johnson expressed his best wishes for the future of that universe and indicated he’s moving on to other projects.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani, Black Adam follows Teth-Adam after he’s released from imprisonment and rises to defend his homeland, Kahndaq. But the Justice Society of America challenges him, and both sides must then confront a common enemy: Sabbac.

The movie Black Adam received mixed reviews, and its box office performance was disappointing, earning only $393.4 million worldwide. Despite this, it actually outperformed some other recent DC films – Shazam! Fury of the Gods made $134.1 million, and The Flash grossed $271.4 million.

As a huge movie fan, I was really excited when Henry Cavill showed up as Superman in that post-credits scene of Black Adam – it felt like a big deal! Apparently, the idea was to eventually build towards a showdown between Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam and Cavill’s Superman in a future film, which would have been awesome.

Following the announcement of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-CEOs of DC Studios on December 20, 2022, Dwayne Johnson released a statement. He said they had agreed to discuss how Black Adam could be included in future DC projects.

Black Adam is available through home media release and on streaming.
