Dune: Part Three Trailer Reveals Time Jump, Differs From Messiah Book

Dune: Part Three has a bigger time jump when compared to Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah novel.

I’m incredibly excited for the next Dune film! Warner Bros. is releasing Dune: Part Three later this year, and from what I understand, Denis Villeneuve is directing again. Of course, Timothée Chalamet will be back as Paul Atreides, continuing the story after Dune and Dune: Part Two. It’s going to be amazing!

How big is the time jump in Dune: Part Three?

I was so excited to hear details about Dune: Part Three at the trailer release event! Apparently, the movie jumps forward 17 years after everything that happened in Dune: Part Two. It’s interesting because the book it’s based on, Dune Messiah, only has a 12-year gap. It seems they’re making some changes to the timeline, which I’m really curious to see how it plays out!

Considering Alia Atreides is a key character in the second half of Frank Herbert’s Dune, her appearance in Dune: Part Two makes sense. Though played by Anya Taylor-Joy, she’s currently only appearing in Paul’s visions, as she hasn’t been born yet. Because Alia also has a significant role in Dune Messiah, the films will likely need to jump forward in time to ensure she’s the right age when Dune: Part Three begins.

Dune: Part Three will star Timothée Chalamet and Anya Taylor-Joy, alongside Zendaya as Chani, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, and Javier Bardem as Stilgar. Also joining the cast are Isaach de Bankolé as Farok, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa as Leto II Atreides, Ida Brooke as Ghanima Atreides, and Robert Pattinson – known for The Batman – as Scytale.

The third Dune movie is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026. You can currently watch the first two films on HBO Max.
