With the end of Stranger Things near, the show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, are sharing insights into important moments and discussing the similarities between the characters of Dr. Kay (Linda Hamilton) and Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine).
In the first part of Stranger Things season 5, Dr. Kay, played by Hamilton, was revealed as a new villain. She’s established a military base in the Upside Down to help her track down Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). Her intense interest in Eleven and others with similar abilities is reminiscent of Dr. Brenner’s experiments with the children.
In a recent interview with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant, the Duffer brothers discussed the parallels between Dr. Kay and Dr. Brenner, noting they share similar goals. However, they explained that Dr. Kay’s methods are much more disturbing and malicious than Brenner’s more paternal approach.
Ross Duffer believes Brenner, while not a ‘good guy,’ did have a fatherly connection with Eleven. Dr. Kay, however, doesn’t view Eleven or Kali that way – she lacks those paternal feelings.
Dr. Kay views Eleven solely as a tool to be exploited. Her only concern is ensuring the continuation of the program through Eleven’s lineage. She disregards Eleven’s humanity entirely, and whether Eleven performs good or bad deeds is irrelevant to her.
That’s a really harsh and unemotional perspective. It suggests that if Eleven gains control, the situation could be even worse than it was with Brenner.
Matt Duffer: Yeah. I mean, she’s just sociopathic.
When Dr. Kay was first introduced, it turned out she was doing some seriously creepy experiments on monsters and, even worse, she was holding Kali – Eleven’s sister, also known as 008 – captive in the Upside Down. For years, I thought of Dr. Brenner as a father figure to Eleven, but as she finally escaped Hawkins Lab, the truth about her life, and Brenner’s role in it, became so much more disturbing than I ever imagined.
As a movie fan, I’ve noticed something really interesting about Dr. Brenner and Dr. Kay. They’re driven by the same things: a thirst for power, a need to control everything around them, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. They both genuinely believed they were doing the right thing, that their work was justified, and they were willing to ignore any ethical concerns to achieve their goals. It’s scary how similar their motivations are, really.
Dr. Kay seems completely devoid of emotion, not only towards Kali and Eleven, but also to everything around her. This makes her a truly dangerous opponent, in contrast to Brenner, whose fondness for Eleven ultimately led to his destruction.
The popular show Stranger Things continues to add new characters, and this season features Dr. Kay and Derek (played by Jake Connelly). Derek has quickly become a fan favorite, but is now being held captive by the series’ villain, Vecna, who is also known as Henry Creel, Dr. Whotsit, or 001 (played by Jamie Campbell Bower).
You can now watch the final season of Stranger Things – volumes 1 and 2 – on Netflix. The very last episode will be released on December 31st.
