At Tokyo Game Show 2025, a presentation highlighted the upcoming *Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake*. It mainly showed a side-by-side comparison of the game’s opening sections from the original 1986 Famicom (NES) version and the new remake for modern consoles.
I was really excited to check out this show – it’s part of Eiko Kano’s Critikano Hit series, which Square Enix has been using for their main TGS streams lately. The creator of Dragon Quest, Yuji Horii, even showed up and gave us a few teasers about the story and how the game will actually play. Before diving into the remake itself, the hosts did a quick recap of the original FC version’s opening – a nice touch for longtime fans like me!
Here, you’ll find direct comparison images. The broadcast featured comparisons of the scene at the King’s throne, plus a look at the old man in the castle who restores the hero’s health and magic points, and a view of the Dragonlord Castle itself.

The remake isn’t a simple copy of the original. It includes extra story sections not found in the first *Dragon Quest* game on the FC/NES. Unlike the original, which begins immediately in the castle, the remake starts with the hero rescuing the castle staff from monsters. Once identified as a descendant of the hero Erdrick, they invite him to meet the king. The remake also includes references to *Dragon Quest III*, which takes place earlier in the series’ timeline and also received an HD-2D remake.
You can still watch the show on the Tokyo Game Show’s YouTube channel, and it’s also embedded below. The remake of Dragon Quest I will be released as part of a package called Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, and it will be available worldwide on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC starting October 30th.
