Dragon Quest 7 Remake Announced After Months Of Speculation

After several months of rumors, it was officially confirmed during Nintendo Direct on Friday that Dragon Quest VII is the next installment in the popular JRPG series to receive an update. This updated version, titled Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined, will be available on both Nintendo Switch and its successor, Nintendo Switch 2. The release date for this new version is set for February 5, 2026, and pre-orders are now open on the Nintendo eShop.

Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined is a complete overhaul of the 2000 PlayStation game, sharing a likeness with Dragon Quest XI in terms of improved graphics. The narrative follows the adventures of a young hero hailing from tranquil Estard Island, accompanied by companions Kiefer and Maribel. Their discovery of ancient ruins grants them the power to traverse time, unveiling forgotten continents that were sealed away centuries ago. Players must address the calamities that caused these lands’ demise and bring them back to life in the current era, gradually piecing together the world one piece at a time.

10 years ago, during the 2015 Nintendo Direct presentation, it was revealed that Dragon Quest VII would be released outside of Japan for the Nintendo 3DS, under the title Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The remake on the 3DS, however, is a streamlined version, as many elements from the original game were removed to reduce its overall length.

Besides working on another highly anticipated seventh installment, Square Enix is also progressing with the Final Fantasy VII Remake series. The script for the third and final chapter was completed in early 2025, marking a significant step forward in the trilogy’s production. In May, they announced that all three parts of the Final Fantasy VII Remake story – including Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which debuted in 2024 – will be playable on the Nintendo Switch 2. Although the final chapter doesn’t have a set release date yet, development is ongoing as we approach the eagerly awaited finale. Additionally, we now know when Remake Intergrade will be available on Switch 2.

Since Dragon Quest VII is not due for several more months, you can delve back into the series by playing the recently released Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. Just a heads up, Square Enix plans to launch the Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake on October 30th.
