The next Dragon Ball Super anime, titled Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, was officially announced on January 25, 2026. The reveal happened during a celebration of the Dragon Ball franchise’s 40th anniversary at the Dragon Ball Genkidamatsuri event in Japan.

This new series picks up right where the original Dragon Ball Super left off, continuing the story that aired from 2015 to 2018. It’s adapting a popular storyline from the Dragon Ball manga that hasn’t been animated before. Toei Animation is currently working on it, and it’s expected to be released around 2027.

When will The Galactic Patrol release?

We’re currently making The Galactic Patrol. Although we don’t have a confirmed release date yet, it’s expected to come out in 2027.

Where The Galactic Patrol fits in the Dragon Ball timeline

The Galactic Patrol doesn’t restart the Dragon Ball story; it picks up right where the Tournament of Power ended in the original series.

The events of the movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly happen right before the story of this arc starts. Think of the movie as a final connection between the original Dragon Ball series and this new continuation.

In 2026, the Dragon Ball franchise will have two releases. The main story will continue with ‘The Galactic Patrol,’ and a special project called ‘Dragon Ball Super: Beerus’ will come out in Fall 2026. This project is a remastered version of the ‘Battle of Gods’ story, featuring improved animation and staying truer to Akira Toriyama’s initial plans for the beginning of Dragon Ball Super.

The upcoming ‘DRAGON BALL SUPER: BEERUS’ arc is expected to have six episodes. Additionally, the ‘Golden Frieza’ arc will be remastered and will likely be around the same length. (Source: @AnimeAjay)

What chapters of the manga are being adapted?

The Galactic Patrol arc, which originally appeared in chapters 42-67 of the Dragon Ball Super manga, has been adapted for the animated series.

I’m so hyped for this new arc! Basically, Goku and Vegeta end up working with this universe-wide police force called the Galactic Patrol. They need their help to take down this seriously dangerous villain named Moro – he’s an ancient wizard who literally eats planets! And get this, he just broke out of prison after being locked up for ten million years! It’s gonna be epic.

Moro is a different kind of villain compared to previous threats like Jiren or Frieza. Instead of just being incredibly strong, he uses magic. He gains power by draining the life force from planets and creatures, which lets him directly weaken his enemies. This is particularly dangerous for Saiyans, as he can steal their energy and even stop them from transforming into Super Saiyans.

Who are The Galactic Patrol?

The Galactic Patrol, headed by the Galactic King, features both well-known members like Jaco and some new faces appearing in this story arc.

I’m really excited about Merus! He’s quickly become one of my favorite characters – he’s the Patrol’s top agent, and he’s right in the middle of everything that’s happening. What’s even cooler is that he seems to have some kind of hidden power connected to the gods, and I have a feeling that’s going to be a huge deal as the story goes on.

Majin Buu takes on a key role as a hero. The Galactic Patrol realizes they need the Grand Supreme Kai, who is currently sleeping within Good Buu. Long ago, the Grand Supreme Kai was the only one who could contain Moro’s dangerous magic, so Buu is crucial to defeating him for good.

Galactic Patrol story overview

This new series is the first time the Dragon Ball Super anime has brought major storylines from the manga to life on screen.

During this storyline, Goku and Vegeta take different approaches to getting stronger. Goku works on mastering Ultra Instinct, and Vegeta goes to Planet Yardrat to learn powerful energy control skills, choosing to improve his techniques instead of just finding new forms.

This storyline isn’t just about Goku and Vegeta; it features the entire team of Z-Fighters, like Tien, Chiaotzu, and Yamcha, working together to defend Earth. This gives the arc a larger, more team-focused feel compared to recent Dragon Ball movies.

Okay, so the Moro Arc of ‘Dragon Ball Super’ is what happens after the Tournament of Power – you know, the big one that aired from 2015 to 2018. It’s basically the story they’re also telling in the manga, but it’s called the ‘Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc’ over there. I’m hyped to see how it all plays out!

Production details

This project draws inspiration from the creations of the late Akira Toriyama, including his stories, characters, and overall design work.

Toei Animation created the series, with Akio Iyoku as executive producer. Iyoku and Masako Nozawa revealed the project at the Genkidamatsuri event, and confirmed Nozawa would once again voice Son Goku.

Initial previews reveal Goku and Vegeta in new Galactic Patrol outfits, leading fans to believe the upcoming series might switch to a quarterly release schedule with improved animation quality, instead of the usual weekly episodes. However, this hasn’t been officially announced yet.
