Dragon Ball Director Wanted Fans to See New Anime as Buu Saga Sequel

The series’ director and producer have clarified where *DAIMA* fits within the *Dragon Ball* timeline. Akio Iyoku, a longtime editor of Akira Toriyama and owner of Capsule Corp Tokyo, along with director Yoshitaka Yashima, confirmed that *DAIMA* is a direct continuation of the story following the ‘Buu Saga’ in *DBZ*, making it officially part of the established canon.

A new commentary track included with the *Dragon Ball DAIMA* Blu-ray reveals how the anime’s creators – co-directors Aya Komaki and Yoshitaka Yashima, and producer Akio Iyoku – approached the latest series. They discussed why they chose to open with familiar scenes from the classic *DBZ* “Buu Saga.” Their goal was to clearly establish that *DAIMA* is a genuine continuation of that story, both for longtime fans and newcomers.

Dragon Ball Exec Confirms That Akira Toriyama Intended DAIMA to Connect to DBZ’s Buu Saga

The new anime, *Dragon Ball DAIMA*, begins right after the events of the “Buu Saga.” The very first episode shows key moments from that saga playing on a screen, as watched by the Demon King Gomah and his follower, Degesu. The creators worked hard to recreate these scenes faithfully, but also with a more updated look, hoping to make them appealing to viewers. However, the visual updates weren’t the only goal.

Iyoku explained that the beginning of *DAIMA* was designed to clearly show it takes place immediately after the events of the Buu Saga. Yoshitaka Yashima, a co-director on *Dragon Ball DAIMA*, confirmed this was the intention. Yashima also shared that while the original outline from the creator indicated the story followed the Majin Buu saga, he was curious to see how it would develop, as the outline was incomplete and only covered the first half of the planned story.

Iyoku, while providing commentary for *Dragon Ball DAIMA* Episode 20, confirmed the anime didn’t have a complete story when production started. They initially received enough material for roughly the first nine to ten episodes. Toriyama-sensei then provided the scripts for the remaining episodes as production was already underway, and the anime team built the story from there.

《Dragon Ball DAIMA》is a direct continuation of the “Buu Saga,” meaning it takes place right before the events of 《Dragon Ball Super》. Though hints in the story suggested this timeline, the absence of Super Saiyan 4 Goku and Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta in 《Dragon Ball Super》 led to some discussion. However, the fact that Akira Toriyama wrote the entire script for 《Dragon Ball DAIMA》 confirms it as an official and important part of the Dragon Ball story.

Considering the hints within the story itself, how it’s written, and what the director has said, it’s now very clear that *Dragon Ball DAIMA* is the most direct continuation of the story after the end of *DBZ*’s “Buu Saga.” Now, it’s up to *Dragon Ball Super* to explain how it connects to the events of *Dragon Ball DAIMA*, rather than the other way around.
