As a seasoned movie critic who has spent decades immersed in the rich tapestry of rock ‘n’ roll history, I find myself deeply saddened by the news of the fire at the Morrison Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. This building, a symbol of rock and roll grit and glamour, holds a special place in my heart as it was the setting for one of the most iconic album covers of all time – The Doors’ “Morrison Hotel.

A well-known downtown LA building, where the iconic rock band The Doors’ album cover photograph was taken, suffered severe damage following a fire that erupted on Thursday morning.

Previously a transient hotel called the Morrison Hotel served as its location, this building was later featured on the cover of The Doors’ fifth album, titled “Morrison Hotel,” named after Jim Morrison, the band’s lead vocalist. Taken by renowned rock photographer Henry Diltz during an impromptu shoot in December 1969, the image appeared on the album released by Elektra Records in February 1970. Tragically, Morrison passed away at the age of 27 in July 1971.

On December 17th, 1969, we were capturing photos for the Morrison Hotel album cover. We were stationed at a temporary hotel in Downtown LA on Hope Street. The Doors weren’t allowed to take pictures there, so when the lobby was vacant, they swiftly darted in and posed behind the window.

For some time now, a structure situated close to where Pico Boulevard meets Hope Street has functioned as a training ground for the Los Angeles Fire Department. Plans were in place to transform it into low-cost residential units.

However, following a fire that occurred at approximately 11 a.m. Pacific Time on Thursday, the building has been declared unsafe (red-tagged). As reported by KTLA-TV Los Angeles, it took roughly 90 minutes for 17 fire departments to bring the blaze under control.

The album ‘Morrison Hotel’ carries a rougher, fittingly gritty tone, reminiscent of a run-down hotel located near Los Angeles’ Skid Row. Kicking off with the lively track ‘Roadhouse Blues’, it also features beloved songs among Doors enthusiasts like ‘Peace Frog’, ‘Waiting for the Sun’, and ‘Ship of Fools’.
