As a seasoned movie critic who has been fortunate enough to witness the golden age of British cinema unfold right before my eyes, I must say that the impending release of Downton Abbey: A New Era holds a unique significance – one tinged with bittersweet nostalgia. The loss of Dame Maggie Smith, the indomitable Dowager Countess, has left an indelible mark on both the storyline and the hearts of fans worldwide.
Lovers of “Downton Abbey” were disheartened when Maggie Smith’s character, the Dowager Countess, passed away in September. Notably, Smith portrayed this role not only in the television series but also in both films. In the latest movie, “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the Countess’s character met her end.
Currently, the executive producer, Gareth Neame, has assured us that the upcoming third film, set for release on September 12th, will feature a heartfelt tribute, not just to the cherished character, but also to the remarkable actress who brought her to life, namely, Ms. Smith herself.
Dame Maggie’s recent passing adds a deeper emotional resonance to our story, as we were already planning it beforehand,” Neame explained during an interview with TVLine for Peacock’s “The Day of the Jackal.” “With her demise, the sorrow portrayed by actors as they mourn their on-screen matriarch feels more poignant and authentic. At the same time, I can’t help but notice that the actors are also grieving for the real-life matriarch of our production, making it all the more significant and meaningful.
Neame refers to the loss as “the conclusion of a period,” expressing that “We won’t witness another Dame Maggie Smith like this again.” He also mentioned that the “Downton Abbey” team’s “immense respect” will be evident in the upcoming film.
Smith earned three Primetime Emmy trophies and a Golden Globe for her exceptional portrayal of the Dowager Countess in the “Downton Abbey” television production.
Prior to her stunning final performance in “Downton Abbey”, Smith had previously won two Best Actress Oscars, one for “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” and another for “California Suite”. She was also nominated for an Oscar on three occasions: for “Travels With My Aunt”, “A Room With a View”, and for “Gosford Park”, which she shared with writer Julian Fellowes, who also contributed to “Downton Abbey”.
