Dorothy Will Be In Wicked For: Good, But We Won’t See Her Face. Jon M. Chu Explained Why

I’ve always loved movie musicals, and it’s so exciting to see another one potentially vying for Best Picture – Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good! The first film was a huge hit and even got an Oscar nomination, and honestly, the hype for this next one is incredible. Everyone’s wondering if Dorothy Gale will play a big part, but apparently, we won’t actually see her face in the movie. Chu explained the reasoning behind that decision, and it actually makes perfect sense – a really thoughtful choice, I think!

As a huge movie and musical fan, I’ve been following the Wicked movie news closely, and it sounds like even the most dedicated stage fans are in for some surprises! Apparently, even with Stephen Schwartz writing two brand new songs, there are changes coming. The director, known for Crazy Rich Asians, recently told People why we won’t actually see Dorothy in the sequel, and it’s a pretty interesting reason…

I didn’t want to interfere with your existing ideas about Dorothy or the story you had in mind. Ultimately, this is still about Elphaba and Glinda, and she’s just caught in the middle of their story.

This storytelling choice fits the narrative well and stays true to the original stage production. Dorothy is only mentioned and appears offstage throughout the show, except for a brief moment at the end where her shadow recreates the iconic water-throwing scene from The Wizard of Oz. There’s been a lot of online discussion about who will play Dorothy in Wicked: For Good, but it appears that speculation was unfounded.

You can watch the first Wicked movie on Amazon Prime Video. New subscribers can get a 30-day free trial, then it’s $14.99 per month. Alternatively, you can save 22% and pay $139 for a full year of access. See the deal here.

Before recently, director Jon M. Chu hinted at Dorothy’s role in the upcoming Wicked sequel. Though we’ve seen her in scenes with the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion, it appears she won’t have much dialogue – not enough to justify a clear view of her face in the film For Good. The story primarily focuses on Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, not Dorothy.

Even though the story focuses on the witches, Dorothy and her companions appear quite a bit in the trailers for Wicked: For Good. This is likely because The Wizard of Oz remains so popular with fans, and the filmmakers probably hope it will draw people who don’t usually go to musicals into seeing the film. However, we shouldn’t anticipate Dorothy playing a major role, as she’s known from the original story.

Although Dorothy won’t appear in the new movie, For Good, her friend will. I won’t reveal how the Scarecrow and Tin Man play a role, but Colman Domingo will be the voice of the Cowardly Lion. It’s unclear exactly how much he’ll be in the film, but fans are excited about his involvement.

The secrets will finally be unveiled when Wicked: For Good arrives in cinemas on November 21st, 2025. Initial reactions to the movie are incredibly promising, and now we’ll see if it can live up to the huge popularity of the original.
