The first film was a huge hit and even got an Oscar nomination, and honestly, the hype for this next one is incredible. Everyone’s wondering if Dorothy Gale will play a big part, but apparently, we won’t actually see her face in the movie. Chu explained the reasoning behind that decision, and it actually makes perfect sense – a really thoughtful choice, I think!

The director, known for Crazy Rich Asians, recently told People why we won’t actually see Dorothy in the sequel, and it’s a pretty interesting reason…

I didn’t want to interfere with your existing ideas about Dorothy or the story you had in mind. Ultimately, this is still about Elphaba and Glinda, and she’s just caught in the middle of their story.

This storytelling choice fits the narrative well and stays true to the original stage production. Dorothy is only mentioned and appears offstage throughout the show, except for a brief moment at the end where her shadow recreates the iconic water-throwing scene from The Wizard of Oz. There’s been a lot of online discussion about who will play Dorothy in Wicked: For Good, but it appears that speculation was unfounded.

Even though the story focuses on the witches, Dorothy and her companions appear quite a bit in the trailers for Wicked: For Good. This is likely because The Wizard of Oz remains so popular with fans, and the filmmakers probably hope it will draw people who don’t usually go to musicals into seeing the film. However, we shouldn’t anticipate Dorothy playing a major role, as she’s known from the original story.
