In the second “Classic” mode for Overwatch, often referred to as the “Moth Meta,” it’s the players who specialize in using Doomfist that seem to be appearing the most frequently.
During the second Overwatch Classic event, the game has returned to the period known as the “Moth Meta” era, a challenging phase in Overwatch’s past, characterized by the frequent use of Mercy’s ability to quickly revive multiple heroes at once.
However, it was also an era steeped in nostalgia, marked by characters like Doomfist, Orisa, and Symmetra who had vastly distinct abilities and playing styles compared to their current versions following major updates. Notably, Doomfist, initially a Damage Per Second (DPS) character, was later shifted to the Tank role in Overwatch.
Currently, the return of the original Doomfist in Overwatch Classic has sparked debate among his fans over whether he’s best suited as a Damage Per Second (DPS) character or a tank. However, opinions within the gaming community vary on this matter.
Doomfist players are at an impasse
Fans who previously played Doomfist as a Damage Per Second (DPS) character are currently overjoyed due to the comeback of his contentious uppercut attack and previous movement techniques. Although Doomfist’s kit isn’t an exact replica, like some other characters in this event, it’s very similar, which is pleasing most main Doomfist players.
GetQuakedOn, a popular Doomfist streamer, commented that while the character seems similar (but not identical) to Doomfist, it’s enjoyable to play. He also mentioned his thoughts about Tank Doomfist being incongruous at the moment and suggested a rework to return him to a Damage Per Second role.
Despite the similarity to DPS Doomfist rather than genuine DPS Doom, it’s still an enjoyable play. In this iteration, my Tank Doomfist rollouts carry significance, which is quite amusing. Playing as DPS Doom once more really highlights how unsuitable Tank Doomfist is at the moment and how he should be adjusted accordingly.

Many players who use Doomfist find that the Tank version of him lacks the power and excitement of his previous iterations, inflicting less damage and appearing less lively in general.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that not every fellow player shares my enthusiasm for Doomfist. Some are enjoying his old kit, but others are quickly reminded of the reasons they didn’t appreciate squaring off against him initially.
One user in a popular Reddit post commented, ‘I’m not pining for DPS Doom.’ However, they did mention that they are enjoying themselves with him during this event.
Another player said fighting against DPS Doom is just frustrating and not fun to go against.

This player commented, “Although he wasn’t the most powerful hero, he was still annoying to face during gameplay and seemed poorly constructed overall.
Some players are content with the Tank version of Doomfist but they miss his previous skills, particularly his uppercut ability which provided Doomfist with unique movement techniques. GetQuakedOn has detected new voice lines for the uppercut ability, and since Blizzard hinted at “groundbreaking changes” and many players are anticipating a talent tree system, it appears that fans of Doomfist would be satisfied if his old abilities return, regardless of whether Doomfist remains as a tank.
GetQuakedOn stated, ‘If Season 15 introduces a talent tree system, I’ll skip the block option if they reinstate the uppercut.’
Regardless of your opinion, Doomfist remains a permanent fixture in the Overwatch Classic game mode until February 18th. However, don’t forget that characters such as Orisa, Symmetra, Mercy, and Sombra have undergone significant changes in their skill sets compared to the current version of the game, so they’re also worth giving a good look.
