Doom: The Dark Ages Update Makes Its Horde Mode More Customizable (And Shareable)

The newest update to Doom: The Dark Ages lets players customize the Ripatorium horde mode even further and boosts the Doom Slayer’s abilities. Now, you can quickly switch between melee weapons and Shield Runes during combat.

The Ripatorium first launched in August as a way to fight waves of enemies with customizable challenges. With the recent Doom: The Dark Ages Update 3, it’s been revamped into a round-based arena, giving players even more control over how each round unfolds.

Players can battle up to five sets of enemies, with each set containing as many as ten waves. Other improvements are small, such as adjustments to how the game sees enemies and icons that now show where the last few enemies are. A new passcode feature lets players easily share their custom arenas with friends. The developers at Id Software also plan to highlight and share the best player-created arenas within the game.

Update 3 focuses on the Ripatorium, but it also improves how Doom: The Dark Ages plays. Players can now quickly switch between Shield Runes and melee weapons during combat. This gives them more flexibility, as different tools are better suited for different situations. Previously, changing these required navigating menus – now it can be done instantly during a fight.

Players can now customize the difficulty of the ‘Brink of Death’ state, choosing between Normal and Hard. On Hard mode, staying alive when critically injured is tougher because you’ll receive fewer resources to help recover. We’ve also tweaked various combat situations in the campaign and adjusted the attacks of bosses and enemies, including the Cacodemon.

Alessandro Barbosa of TopMob praised the new Doom: The Dark Ages, stating that it shows the series still has fresh ideas to explore. He particularly liked how the game’s close-combat fighting blended well with its classic shooting gameplay. Doom: The Dark Ages is up for two awards at The Game Awards 2025: Best Action Game and Innovation in Accessibility.
