Doom: The Dark Ages Release In May With Giant Mech And Cybernetic Dragon Vehicles

On May 15, it was revealed during an Xbox Developer Direct broadcast that Doom: The Dark Ages will be released. This new prequel to Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal was given a detailed look, with insights provided about the weaponry, mission design, and storyline.

Bethesda has announced a change in tone for the upcoming Doom game, titled Dark Ages. Instead of making players feel like they’re flying a fighter jet as in Doom Eternal, Dark Ages will let gamers play as an armored tank, capable of holding its ground. This transformation is largely due to the multi-functional Shield Saw, a new piece of equipment that allows for blocking, parrying, and attacking, each action enhancing the variety of firearms at your disposal. Moreover, Bethesda emphasized that strafing will once again be an effective strategy in Dark Ages. Additionally, the Glory Kill has been updated to be more adaptable based on the weapons you’re using and the angle from which you attack the demon enemies.

In this game, as the Slayer, you’ll primarily fight demons on foot, but there are exciting side activities too! You’ll get to pilot both a colossal mech and a cybernetic dragon, each with unique skills and mini-bosses to conquer. The developers highlighted that each mode offers distinct challenges. In the missions, you’ll encounter a grand battle outside a medieval castle, where an expansive sandbox environment allows exploration for hidden secrets and resources. Once you breach the enemy lines, heading back to the castle gates will initiate what seems like a massive boss fight.

In the new Doom game, the narrative takes center stage with numerous cutscenes detailing the tale of the Slayer – a weapon imbued with life who’s been imprisoned by hellish forces. Instead of needing to sift through the codex for background information on the game’s plot, the story unfolds more naturally. During an interview, Bethesda’s Marty Stratton revealed that they drew inspiration from Batman: Year One comic when crafting this narrative. Furthermore, it has been confirmed by the studio that this is a single-player campaign game without any multiplayer features.

For the new soundtrack, Finishing Move will take over the composing duties. Previously, both Doom and Doom Eternal had music created by Mick Gordon. However, due to a public disagreement, it appeared improbable he’d rejoin for this upcoming sequel.

The studio also indicated that this version of Doom is designed to be more accessible than its predecessors, offering a variety of adjustable difficulty settings for tailoring the combat experience to your preference. Notably, these settings can increase or decrease the challenge, allowing you to intensify the action with quicker and more intense gameplay if desired. The settings cover various aspects such as player and demon damage, enemy projectile speed, aggression levels, parry window, daze duration, game speed, and resource values.
