Don’t Think Of Tanselle As Dunk’s Love Interest in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – Here’s Why (Exclusive)

One thing viewers learned from Game of Thrones is that women can be complex characters with their own goals, not just exist to further a male character’s story. The new Game of Thrones spinoff follows this same idea. Even though Duncan “Dunk” the Tall (Peter Claffey) seems interested in Tanselle (Tanzyn Crawford), a puppeteer he meets early on, it doesn’t mean her role will be limited to being a love interest.

Crawford later clarified that her character’s storyline might have hinted at a romantic connection from the beginning. She explained that the audition scene felt like it established a chemistry similar to scenes later in the show. Crawford also suggested that the future of the characters Dunk and Tanselle remains open-ended. While a romance is possible, it isn’t certain. She wanted their relationship to feel authentic, like getting to know someone naturally, rather than being immediately obvious.

In George R.R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, Tanselle is a puppeteer and painter from Dorne who plays an important role in Dunk’s journey during the Ashford Tourney. Though Ira Parker, the showrunner, and the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms team had a certain vision for her, Crawford chose to create her own unique portrayal of the character.

When asked about balancing faithfulness to the original stories with her own creative choices, Crawford explained that she aimed to both respect the source material and put her own spin on the character. She didn’t want to simply recreate the character as she appeared in the original novellas, feeling that approach had already been done. Instead, she wanted to create a version that felt uniquely her own.

Ultimately, Crawford received Martin’s endorsement, recalling that Martin told him he was precisely what he’d expected, which gave him a significant boost of confidence.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Debuts With the Lowest Audience Score of Any Game of Thrones Show

The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is receiving incredible reviews, possibly even better than the initial reactions to Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Currently, it has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing the 90% scores achieved by the first seasons of those other shows. However, audience scores tell a different story.

The premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already received a rating. For comparison, the first seasons of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon earned audience scores of 96% and 82% respectively. It’s still early, though, and the score for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could improve. With five episodes left in the first season, the show has a good opportunity to attract more viewers.

New episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premiere every Sunday at 10 PM ET on HBO.
