Donkey Kong’s Redesign Seems To Go Beyond New Mario Kart

It’s possible that Donkey Kong might undergo a complete makeover. A sneak peek of the character was shown in the demo reel for the Switch 2, which also featured what looks like Mario Kart 9. However, it seems this updated appearance for DK isn’t confined to the game alone, but will also extend to merchandise.

Donkey Kong has undergone multiple design changes since his initial appearance in 1981, which resembled King Kong quite significantly. Later, with the introduction of Rare’s Donkey Kong Country series, he experienced a major makeover. In his standalone series, Donkey Kong was given a necktie, a slight wave in his hair, narrower nostrils, and a furrowed brow that often gave him a concerned or troubled expression.

In the latest design for Donkey Kong, inspired by his character portrayal in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, attentive fans have spotted changes on Nintendo’s Japanese merchandise. His brow has been reduced, creating a softer, more approachable appearance. While some ardent Donkey Kong enthusiasts on Reddit expressed reservations, others voiced their appreciation for the updated look.

Initially, I resisted the new design tweak for our beloved character, DK. But upon closer inspection, I’ve come to appreciate its merit. Previously, it seemed like DK was perpetually in a bad mood, right? Well, the brow reduction has opened up a wider spectrum of emotional expression, and once I got over the initial shock of the change, I must admit it looks quite appealing now.

Currently, only Donkey Kong is set to have a revamp, but it remains undecided whether Diddy Kong and other members of the Kong clan will also undergo changes.
