Dominic Sessa Officially Signs on to Play Anthony Bourdain in A24 Biopic ‘Tony,’ Antonio Banderas Joins Cast

In a forthcoming biopic produced by A24, “The Holdovers” actor Dominic Sessa has been confirmed to portray the iconic figure Anthony Bourdain. Additionally, Oscar-nominated performer Antonio Banderas is also set to join the cast in this new film about Bourdain’s life.

Antonio Banderas’ part for the project is being kept secret, while it was reported that director Matt Johnson (“Blackberry”) had discussions with Sessa about this undertaking last summer. The movie, named “Tony,” is scheduled to be shot in 1976, depicting a significant moment in Anthony Bourdain’s life when he undergoes a transformative experience while working and residing in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Filming will commence next month.

Two years following the depicted timeframe, Anthony Bourdain chose to attend culinary school. Notably recognized as the previous executive chef at New York’s Brasserie Les Halles, he gained fame through his 2000 memoir titled “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly.”

Winning a posthumous Emmy for his significant impact on the unscripted television genre with shows like “No Reservations” and “Parts Unknown,” Bourdain tragically passed away in 2018 at the age of 61, within the picturesque French city of Strasbourg.

Johnson is overseeing a script penned by Todd Bartels and Lou Howe. The film will be jointly financed and produced by A24, Star Thrower, and Zapruer Films. Star Thrower is helmed by Tim and Trevor White, who recently completed an upcoming A24 drama titled “Eternity,” directed by David Freyne, written by Pat Cunnane, and starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, Callum Turner, and Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Johnson and Matthew Miller are co-producing the project through Zapruder Films.

Executive producer roles for the project will be filled by Kimberly Witherspoon (representing Bourdain’s estate), Chris Stinson, Amy Greene, Lou Howe, Bartels, and Emily Rose.

John recently screened his film “Nirvana The Band The Show The Movie” at SXSW. He’s represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and Chris Spicer at Akin Gump. On the other hand, Sessa is also managed by CAA, Untitled, and Steve Warren at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller. Banderas is handled by Emanuel Nunez at NuCo Media Group and George Hayum at Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof and Fishman.

Star Thrower is represented by CAA and attorney David Boyle.
