Doja Cat responds after slamming Timothée Chalamet amid ballet & opera controversy

Doja Cat has apologized for criticizing Timothée Chalamet. She previously called him out for his remarks about ballet and opera, but now says she was just trying to appear virtuous and was actually feeling vulnerable and in need of support.

If you’ve been following the Oscars buzz, you’ve probably heard about Timothée Chalamet’s recent interview. While promoting his film, he had a lengthy conversation with Matthew McConaughey during a town hall event hosted by Variety and CNN.

I was pretty shocked to hear him say around the 50-minute mark that he doesn’t even want to be doing ballet or opera anymore – he actually said people just don’t care about it! It’s caused a huge uproar online, and it’s already affecting his Oscar chances. Apparently, his odds of winning Best Actor in 2026 have plummeted from a super-likely 86% down to just 29% according to Gold Derby. It’s a really big shift!

Doja Cat, also known as Amala Dlamini, recently addressed the recent debate in a TikTok video. She pointed out that opera and ballet are centuries-old art forms – 400 and 500 years old respectively – and that people generally hold them in high regard.

Doja Cat walks back on Timothée Chalamet criticism

While Timothée Chalamet hasn’t said anything publicly, Doja Cat has removed her video and explained she might have overreacted to the situation while caught up in the moment.

She readily admitted she knows very little about opera or ballet. Although she took ballet lessons as a teenager, she emphasized she’s definitely not a professional dancer.

I’ve never experienced ballet or opera. Yesterday, I felt pressured to join the trend of expressing strong opinions online, because it seems like people want to be involved in some kind of public reaction or movement.

Doja Cat said she saw a TikTok video the day before featuring an opera expert who shared a lot of information about the topic and pointed out that Timothée Chalamet’s statement wasn’t expressed very well.

The expert also pointed out that, while the actor’s comments weren’t well-received, he had a point – both opera and ballet are facing challenges financially. She admitted, “He clearly knew more about the situation than I did, so I have to agree with him.”

I was just trying to seem like a good person yesterday, hoping to get attention and make connections. I realized Timothée’s mistake was a chance for people to engage with me.

Doja Cat has been honest about acting without much thought lately, explaining she recently posted something without considering the reasons. She simply said, ‘I think I just wanted a hug.’

Wow, her video blew up! I’ve been scrolling through the comments and it’s amazing how many people are on her side. A lot of gamers are saying she totally had a right to post what she did, and they’re sending her tons of support.

One person wrote, “I’m not sure what happened, but you don’t need to apologize.” Another commenter said, “Timmy did need to be addressed, though.” Doja agreed, simply stating, “Yeah, that’s okay too.”

Everyone’s been speculating about what made Doja do that livestream. Some people are saying she was pressured from the outside – like, did Kylie Jenner reach out or something? Others think it had to do with Timmy, maybe even a legal threat. A bunch of folks are also guessing her record label got involved and forced her hand.

Doja responded, explaining she hadn’t been contacted about the situation. She admitted she felt like a fraud because she’d never actually been to an opera or ballet, but she saw it as a chance to be genuine.
