As a passionate supporter of powerful storytelling that sheds light on important societal issues, I am utterly captivated by Shiori Ito’s “Black Box Diaries”. This film is more than just a documentary; it’s a testament to one woman’s courage and resilience in the face of adversity.
The London-based documentary sales and production company, Dogwoof, has successfully obtained more distribution rights for Shiori Ito’s “Black Box Diaries,” a documentary that was recently nominated for the Best Documentary Feature category at the Oscars.
This year’s Sundance Film Festival saw the debut of the movie in a competitive category, and since then, it has garnered appreciation from both audiences and critics at film festivals across the globe, earning multiple awards along the way.
Dogwoof has made additional deals in various countries such as the BBC Storyville (United Kingdom), ZDF/Arte (Germany and France), Sky Digi Ent. (Taiwan), Star Alliance (China), Anticipate (Singapore and Thailand), Falcon Pictures (Indonesia), Discovery (ex-Yugoslavia), and MBC (Middle East and North Africa).
In my previous announcement, I excitedly shared that a variety of esteemed film distributors would be joining our ranks. These include Art House Films from France, Trigon from Switzerland, Periscoop hailing from the Benelux region, NonStop covering Scandinavia and the Baltics, Anticipate Pictures based in Singapore, Filmin out of Spain, Sherry Media representing Canada, and lastly, EDKO from Hong Kong. Each of these distributors brings a unique cinematic perspective to our growing collection.
Starting January 7th, MTV Documentary Films – having secured distribution rights from Dogwoof – will premiere the movie on Paramount+ as well as Showtime. This release date is a day before the Oscar nomination voting process commences on the 8th of January. Earlier in October, Dogwoof had distributed the film in cinemas across the U.K. and Ireland.

Through this journey, Ito’s quest becomes a groundbreaking case in Japan, unveiling the country’s antiquated legal and societal structures that desperately need reform.
A multitalented individual specializing in stories about gender equality and human rights, Ito penned the critically acclaimed book “Black Box,” inspired by her personal experiences. This work earned her the Free Press Association of Japan Award for Outstanding Journalism in 2018 and has since been translated into eleven languages, including English.
