A devoted dog’s decade-long vigil at his owner’s grave has led to a change in Brazilian law, now permitting pets to be buried alongside their human families.
I just read this amazing news! Apparently, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, you can now legally bury your cats and dogs in family plots! The BBC reported that as long as everything is done safely and meets health standards, it’s officially allowed. It’s such a comforting thought knowing you can keep your furry family members close, even after they’re gone.
The recently passed law is named in honor of Bob Coveiro, a loyal dog who gained fame after attending his owner’s funeral in Taboao da Serra and remaining at the cemetery ever since.
It was heartbreaking, honestly. This dog, even when my aunt and uncle tried to bring him home with them, just kept running back to where his owner was buried. He was completely devoted and couldn’t bear to leave his person’s side – it was incredibly sad to watch, but also showed just how strong their bond was.
Loyal dog sparks new law in Brazil
For about ten years, Bob made his home at the cemetery, where he offered comfort to people grieving and became a well-known figure to visitors.
State Representative Eduardo Nobrega explained on Facebook that the new law acknowledges the important connection between families and their pets. It provides a respectful way to say goodbye, prevents animals from being disposed of improperly, and offers a legal and fair option for pet owners.
“It is not an exaggeration. It is not nonsense. It is love. And now it is also law.”

Man, it was so sad. This dog, Bob, got hit by a car back in 2021, and his owner was just devastated. They were super close, and honestly, their story actually led to some new laws being passed. It’s like, even in tragedy, their bond made a difference. It really stuck with me when I heard about it.
I was so moved by this dog’s story – it totally reminded me of Hachiko! You know, that incredibly loyal dog in Japan who waited for his owner at the train station for years after he passed away? This dog’s devotion is just as amazing and it’s clear he’ll be remembered for it all over the world.
