‘Dog Man’ to Lead Box Office Pack Again as Ke Huy Quan’s ‘Love Hurts’ and Slasher ‘Heart Eyes’ Target Single-Digit Starts

The movie “Dog Man” is predicted to dominate at the box office, with two fresh entries, the action-comedy “Love Hurts” from Universal and Sony’s horror film “Heart Eyes,” entering the competition.

Over the upcoming cold weekend at movie theaters, the romantic films “Love Hurts” and “Heart Eyes” are projected to earn around $7 million to $8 million each. This would allow “Dog Man,” the family film from Universal and DreamWorks Animation about a police officer who bonds with his dog after an on-the-job injury, to continue leading with an estimated $19 million to $22 million in its second week.

2024’s Super Bowl box office will hold the record for being the slowest, with a total of $42 million from all films such as “Argylle” and “Lisa Frankenstein”. Typically, movie theater attendance drops during the Super Bowl weekend, which is usually the most-watched TV event of the year. This trend seems likely to continue for this year’s matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, as ticket sales are not expected to surge until after the game, when Disney and Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World” and Sony’s “Paddington in Peru” hit theaters on February 14.

Love Hurts” will premiere in 3,200 North American theaters and over 30 international markets. With a production budget of $18 million, this film won’t need significant earnings to become profitable during its theater release. The stunt coordinator Jonathan Eusebio, known for his work on films like “Black Panther,” “The Avengers,” and “John Wick,” makes his directorial debut with this R-rated movie. In the lead role is Ke Huy Quan, who has returned to acting after winning an Oscar for his performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Quan plays a peaceful realtor whose past as a deadly hitman resurfaces when he discovers that his supposedly deceased partner in crime is alive.
