For over a decade, the BBC and Netflix series Peaky Blinders has followed Tommy Shelby’s complex inner life across six seasons. The show begins in the wake of World War I and continues through the years leading up to the turmoil of World War II in Britain.

The latest film is set during the bombing of Birmingham, where Tommy Shelby has withdrawn to his remote home to grapple with the consequences of his violent life, including the death of his brother, Arthur. While he reflects, his long-lost son, Duke (Barry Keoghan), now leads the Peaky Blinders, ruling with ruthless brutality.

Does Tommy Shelby die in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man?

Tommy Shelby does indeed die in the final installment, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. Kaulo persuades him to rescue Duke from making dangerous choices by returning to Birmingham and thwarting a Nazi scheme. She promises that if he does, she and her sister will help him find peace.

Tommy arrives after it’s too late to save his sister Ada from being killed by Nazi agent Beckett. However, he does find his son, though their reunion involves a messy fight at a pig farm. Together, they come up with a dangerous plan to destroy a large amount of money stored in a warehouse in Liverpool.

Before beginning their plan, Kaulo reveals to Duke that he and his father will fight together. Then, under the cover of darkness, Duke will be the one to end Tommy’s life, claiming the title of Rom Baro, the Gypsy King. Kaulo’s true intention all along was to grant Tommy a peaceful death – by having his own son be the one to do it.

The group successfully destroys the counterfeit money, and during the escape, they also manage to eliminate some Nazi soldiers. However, Beckett unexpectedly turns on Tommy, driving a car directly at him and shooting him twice in the abdomen.

Thankfully, my aim with Tommy was on point and I got a headshot! Even though the guy seemed like he’d given up and was just waiting for the inevitable, Duke dove and tackled him at the last second, saving him from getting run over.

The gunshots have severely wounded Tommy, and he begs his son to end his suffering, comparing himself to a horse and asking if his son would do the same for an animal in pain.

Duke shot his father, using a bullet engraved with his own name, as Tommy remembered his life. As it happened, Kaulo’s prediction was true – Tommy’s son did bring him peace, though not in the dark and frightening manner they’d imagined.

With Tommy’s loved ones gathered around a red Gypsy carriage for his cremation, Kaulo hands Duke the book Tommy’s father had been writing, called ‘The Immortal Man.’ The book seems to contain Tommy’s final wishes, written as if it were a message from him.

He reflects on almost achieving everything he desired, but acknowledges that ‘almost’ isn’t enough. Despite the hardships, he always had his family, and they are now together, finding refuge wherever they can. He requests his body be cremated and his ashes scattered, signifying his newfound freedom. This marks the end of Tommy Shelby’s story.
