In the year 1923, Jacob Dutton stands as the central figure, safeguarding the ranch and bravely enduring gunfire. However, the question remains: Does he meet his end in the Yellowstone prequel series?
Yellowstone fans have had a difficult period, as the finale in December 2024 marked the end of the beloved series and took out not just one but four significant characters. Some may argue that certain characters received their due more than others, but the unexpected demise of Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton, proved that no character was invincible to the chop.
In 1923, it’s Jacob Dutton, portrayed by Harrison Ford, who holds the reins. The time, before the Great Depression, presents unique challenges for the Dutton clan. Ultimately, it’s about safeguarding their property and themselves.
During his relentless struggle to keep the ranch, Jacob Dutton exhausts every resource at his disposal. This is a glimpse into the life of the patriarch in the Taylor Sheridan spin-off series (beware: spoilers follow).
Does Jacob Dutton die in 1923?
Jacob Dutton’s character hasn’t died in 1923 yet, but he’s had some very close brushes with death.
In a particularly dramatic turn, Jacob nearly met his end during Season 1, Episode 3. A heated gunfight left him with multiple bullet wounds, leading spectators to anticipate his demise in the subsequent episode.
However, Episode 4 came around, and Jacob was (somehow) still alive.
It was a tight situation that undeniably strained Jacob’s wellbeing significantly. He needed considerable time to get better, during which his wife, Cara, assumed control of the daily operations while he recuperated.
Jacob’s fate is unavoidable
Since the Dutton Ranch is set to be inherited by either Jack or Spencer Dutton, it’s only a matter of time before Jacob meets his end. This could occur during a struggle to protect the land, or simply due to the passage of time and old age.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve always admired the wise and experienced character, Jacob, who’s 78 in the series. But with the new generation stepping up to lead the franchise, it seems like my time might be coming to an end.
Additionally, since Season 2 marks the conclusion of the prequel, it’s highly likely that a significant character death will feature prominently in the storyline.
In addition to the Duttons, Donald Whitfield serves as a significant adversary. Previously, he had covered all the ranch’s tax debts, which means that if they fail to repay him within a year, he will legally obtain the property. Furthermore, there is also Banner Creighton, who works under Whitfield.
If the pair decided to execute a particularly underhanded tactic, eliminating the leader of the ranch might prove to be the most effective approach.
In the upcoming season, just as John Dutton was a significant target in 2024, Jacob might find himself in a similar vulnerable position.
