Be warned, this contains spoilers for episodes 3 and 4 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms! In episode 3, Egg heard a disturbing prophecy suggesting he might become another unstable Targaryen king. This happened before Dunk realized Egg was actually Aegon Targaryen, so Dunk dismissed it as nonsense. However, Egg himself felt that the prophecy might be true.
I was watching A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and the old woman’s predictions were wild! First, she told Dunk he’d be wealthier than the Lannisters – sounded like typical flattery to get a coin or two. But then she turned to Egg, and it got really intense. She said, “You shall be king, and die in a hot fire, and worms shall feed upon your ashes, and all who know you shall rejoice in your passing.” Honestly, it sent chills down my spine! It was such a stark contrast, and a seriously creepy prophecy.
Considering the history of Targaryen rulers in Game of Thrones, it seems likely that Egg will face challenges as a leader. Both Aerys and Daenerys descended into madness, so a difficult reign wouldn’t be surprising. However, Egg’s kind nature in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms makes us hope for better. Fortunately, the extensive background George R.R. Martin has created in A Song of Ice and Fire suggests there’s still room for a different outcome.
Egg’s Prophecy In A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Is Very Misleading
Warning: Major spoilers ahead for the Dunk and Egg stories from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire! A prophecy about Egg in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms accurately predicts both his future as king and the circumstances of his death. Despite being born into a family with limited claim to the throne – the fourth son of a fourth son – Egg eventually becomes King Aegon V Targaryen after a string of family tragedies. He rules for 26 years before dying in an event called the Tragedy of Summerhall, and surprisingly, those who knew him well were actually relieved when he passed away.
The prophecy suggesting Egg would be a cruel king is actually a deliberate deception. When Aegon V becomes king, he surprisingly fights for the common people. His time as Dunk’s squire gave him a different outlook than most Targaryens, and he focused on improving the lives of ordinary citizens rather than enriching the noble families. This, understandably, made many highborn lords – including some of his own Targaryen family – deeply resent him.
The old woman casually mentioned that those familiar with King Egg would be happy to see him gone. The common people didn’t know him personally, so their grief wasn’t noted. Furthermore, many of Egg’s closest companions, including Dunk, died with him in the fire, leaving no one to counter the joy some felt at his death.
Egg Was A Great King, But His Rule Led To Every Disaster In Game Of Thrones
King Aegon V Targaryen was a lot like what fans wanted to see from Daenerys in Game of Thrones. He genuinely tried to reform the system, focusing on helping the vulnerable instead of letting the powerful continue to accumulate wealth and influence. Sadly, his attempt to revive dragons left no clear heir to continue his work. Ultimately, his efforts were reversed by his grandson, Aerys II Targaryen, who became known as the Mad King.
As fans of Game of Thrones might remember, Maester Aemon Targaryen once spoke with Jon Snow about an alternate history. He imagined what would have happened if he, instead of his younger brother, had broken his vows and taken the throne. Aemon believed that Aerys wouldn’t have become the Mad King, preventing Robert’s Rebellion. This would have saved Rhaegar’s life and spared his children from being killed, and Daenerys would have grown up safely at home instead of in exile.
Aemon passed away before Daenerys’s journey unfolded in Game of Thrones, and he never discovered Jon Snow’s true origins. However, none of those events would have occurred if Aegon hadn’t become king in the first place. Ultimately, without Aegon – Egg, as featured in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – there wouldn’t be a story to tell, suggesting everything happened exactly as it was meant to.
