A popular Star Wars villain has returned in a new series, leaving fans wondering what happens to him after the events of ‘Maul: Shadow Lord.’ Surprisingly, an older animated show already answers that question, revealing his ultimate fate.
It’s been a while since we last saw a live-action Star Wars series with the conclusion of Andor Season 2. But Disney+ has been consistently adding new animated Star Wars content. Fans enjoyed the third season of Star Wars: Visions back in October, and now the series Maul: Shadow Lord has launched with its first two episodes, which will now be followed by weekly releases.
Many fans recall how Darth Maul somehow lived on after being bisected by Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace. Now, he’s returned, seeking revenge and building a criminal empire on the planet Jannix.
Does the main villain survive the events of Maul: Shadow Lord? Here’s a breakdown of where this story fits within the larger Star Wars timeline.
When is Maul: Shadow Lord set?
Maul: Shadow Lord takes place in the years between the end of Revenge of the Sith and the beginning of A New Hope.
The story continues right after the villain’s escape during the events of Order 66, which happened at the end of The Clone Wars. Before that, he took control of Mandalore – the planet where many of the bounty hunters from The Mandalorian come from – and this is shown in the final episodes of the animated series.
Near the end of The Clone Wars, Emperor Palpatine gave the order to eliminate the Jedi, causing the clone troopers to attack Ahsoka Tano. To create a diversion and escape, Ahsoka freed Maul from his prison. The story of Maul: Shadow Lord begins with him assembling a team to seize control of a powerful criminal organization within the Star Wars galaxy.
This happens long before Darth Maul appears in Star Wars Rebels, where he tries to train Ezra Bridger as his apprentice, eventually leading him to the desert planet Tatooine.
Does Darth Maul die after Maul: Shadow Lord?

Darth Maul does indeed die after the events depicted in the Maul: Shadow Lord series. While the first season is currently being released (and a second is already being made), his death is established in Star Wars Rebels Season 3, Episode 20, “Twin Suns.”
Maul initially survived his duel with Kenobi thanks to his intense anger and desire for revenge. Years later, he finally tracks down his old enemy for one last battle. To find Kenobi, who had gone into hiding, Maul cleverly uses ancient Jedi and Sith records to enlist the help of Ezra Bridger, leading him to Tatooine.
Following a short fight, Kenobi cleverly lures Maul into attacking by mimicking the fighting style Qui-Gon Jinn used before Maul fatally wounded him in The Phantom Menace. Kenobi then defeats Maul by stabbing him, and as Maul dies, he questions whether Kenobi is safeguarding the “Chosen One.”
Believing young Luke Skywalker is the one to bring balance to the Force, Obi-Wan Kenobi reveals this to Darth Maul. Maul, in his dying moments, predicts Luke will avenge both of them, and dies in Kenobi’s arms. It’s a peaceful conclusion to Maul’s story, echoing his original conflict with Qui-Gon Jinn and Kenobi on Naboo.
While we wait for news on the next installment of Maul: Shadow Lord, you can see how all the Star Wars TV shows stack up from worst to best, and find out which upcoming shows in 2026 we’re most excited about.
