A single year following the triumph of Capcom’s Resident Evil video game, talks about a live-action movie were already underway, spearheaded by horror legend George A. Romero. Yet, producer Bernd Eichinger and Capcom producer Yoshiki Okamoto ultimately turned down Romero’s script. A fresh documentary, now available, offers insights into the genesis of Romero’s concept, titled George A. Romero’s Resident Evil.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve just come across a fascinating documentary that takes us on an investigative journey into one of Tinseltown’s most tantalizing “what if” scenarios: If George Romero had helmed a Resident Evil film! You can get a sneak peek at the trailer right here.

1998 saw Constantin Film embarking on a mission to convert the iconic horror video game Resident Evil into a movie. They tapped George A. Romero, a pioneer in the zombie genre, to helm the adaptation. However, despite the seemingly ideal collaboration of horror’s leading minds, Romero’s vision for Resident Evil remained unfulfilled. This intriguing behind-the-scenes tale is now revealed for the first time through Brandon Salisbury’s documentary, captivating fans and the horror industry alike.

As a gamer, I can’t help but acknowledge the heavy influence of George A. Romero’s style and iconic aesthetic on modern zombie games, even when his name isn’t directly associated with them. For instance, Capcom’s Dead Rising series seems to have taken quite a bit from Romero’s work. In fact, the resemblance between the first Dead Rising game and Dawn of the Dead was so striking that they felt compelled to include a disclaimer about it.

The Resident Evil movie franchise has earned more than $1.2 billion, making it the most financially successful horror film series and also the most profitable zombie film series to date.

You can now purchase or rent the documentary on Amazon and Apple TV. Additionally, it will be accessible on Fandango, YouTube, Xbox, DirecTV, Dish Network, and Spectrum as well.
