Documentary Festival CPH:DOX Unveils Competition Lineups With 56 World Premieres

The CPH:DOX Documentary Festival has revealed the lineup for its competitive categories, featuring a total of 71 documentaries. Among these are 56 world debuts, 12 international premieres, and 3 European premieres. The festival takes place from March 19th to 30th.

Niklas Engstrøm, head of CPH:DOX, stated: “The current era is filled with strife, disorder, and skepticism, offering few opportunities for the imaginative or the artistic. In this context, we are pleased to unveil a competition selection that mirrors the world yet also splinters its light, much like a prism. These films, nominated across Ukraine, Mozambique, America, and China, serve as a testament to the significance of poetry and art in our global society.

Mads K. Mikkelsen, the director of CPH:DOX’s program, declared that the competition selection “really embodies documentary as a cinematic art form.” He further stated, “CPH:DOX is all about honoring documentaries and those who create them, and curating this year’s festival has been an enriching adventure filled with exciting discoveries.

At this festival, there are six primary competitions judged by international panels:

1. The DOX:AWARD, worth €10,000, is the main competition that honors films with artistic merit, cultural significance, and powerful personal expression. All 12 nominees for this award will be world premieres.

2. The NEW:VISION Award, also valued at €5,000, recognizes art films and pioneering cinematic experiments.

3. The NEXT:WAVE Award, equally valued at €5,000, spotlights up-and-coming filmmakers in the industry.

4. The NORDIC:DOX Award, again worth €5,000, highlights exceptional documentaries from Nordic countries.

5. The F:ACT Award, with a prize of €5,000, is given to films that combine documentary and investigative journalism effectively.

6. Lastly, the HUMAN:RIGHTS Award, also worth €5,000, focuses on films that address human rights issues significantly.

7. Additionally, festival attendees have the chance to vote for their favorite film through the Audience Award, which carries a prize of €10,000.

The juries are here.
