The long-running TV show, a classic in the sci-fi genre, has been facing declining popularity and fewer viewers recently. Over the past six decades, it’s gone through significant changes and sparked debate about whether it’s focusing too much on social issues in its storylines and casting. The show also made headlines due to reports of difficult behavior from one of its actresses, Millie Gibson, who plays Ruby Sunday. Gibson herself has described her experience during that time as “horrific.”
As a huge Doctor Who fan, I saw the rumors flying everywhere online and in the press when reports came out about Ncuti Gatwa’s companion. People were saying Gibson had been fired after only one season and replaced by Varada Sethu. It was all over the place! Thankfully, Russell T. Davies eventually cleared things up and confirmed that Gibson hadn’t been fired and that her character’s story would continue, which was a huge relief to many of us.
Gibson recently told The i newspaper that she was in a difficult situation regarding reports about her behavior. She explained she couldn’t address the rumors publicly because it would have revealed plot details from the show.
It was difficult to defend myself without revealing plot details. I couldn’t just say it wasn’t true, because that would have been a spoiler. It was awful seeing people assume it was, and their apologies felt strange because it hadn’t actually happened, but I appreciated the thought.
What Is Next for ‘Doctor Who’?
Disney+
While the future of Doctor Who isn’t in jeopardy, there’s still a lot of unknown about when we’ll see the Doctor again. There won’t be a holiday special this year, and a new season hasn’t been officially announced. However, a spin-off miniseries called The War Between the Land and the Sea, featuring the UNIT team, is planned for early 2026. This miniseries will also be the last Doctor Who content co-funded by Disney, as their current agreement with the BBC is ending.
Fans of Doctor Who were shocked by the season finale earlier this year. Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor unexpectedly regenerated into Billie Piper, who previously starred as Rose Tyler with Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. Reports suggest the ending was altered last minute, both because Gatwa decided to leave the show and due to Disney’s hesitation about continuing to fund it.
Even though the future is unclear, the BBC has confirmed that Doctor Who will continue and won’t be cancelled before its 20th anniversary in 2025. Fans will simply need to be very patient as things get sorted out.
