As a long-time enthusiast of the enchanting world of British television, I can hardly contain my excitement for this year’s “Doctor Who” Christmas special! The prospect of Ncuti Gatwa and the delightful Nicola Coughlan facing off against dinosaurs and multiple incarnations of the Doctor is almost too much to bear.
Actors Ncuti Gatwa and Nicola Coughlan from “Bridgerton” will encounter dinosaurs, along with several incarnations of The Doctor, in the teaser for the upcoming “Doctor Who” holiday special this year.
Entitled “Joy to the World,” this special introduces a new character named Joy, played by Coughlan, who checks into a London hotel during the festive season. However, an unintended action leads her to uncover a hidden portal to the Time Hotel, revealing peril, dinosaurs, and the Doctor. The episode’s summary continues: “A sinister plot is brewing worldwide, perfectly timed for Christmas. What’s happening in Joy’s hotel room? An old foe of the Doctor’s is waiting in the wings, with the fate of all human history at stake. Can the Doctor prevent Christmas disasters simultaneously across the globe?
Apart from Gatwa and Coughlan, this special also features Steph de Whalley as Anita, Jonathan Aris as Melnak, Joel Fry as Trev, Peter Benedict as Basil, Julia Watson as Hilda, and Niamh Marie Smith as Sylvia. The special is set to air on Disney+ at 9:10 a.m. PT on December 25, and it will also be broadcasted on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the U.K.
It was often speculated that Coughlan would become a part of the “Doctor Who” universe, which Davies verified before the Christmas special of last year. Moreover, she acted alongside Gatwa in “Barbie” last year, sparking excitement among fans for additional screen appearances from this pair. Now, their wish for more on-screen moments together has come true.
The popular tune “Joy to the World” was penned by Steven Moffat, a recurrent figure in “Doctor Who,” and helmed by director Alex Sanjiv Pillai, who has also worked on shows like “Riverdale” and “Bridgerton.” Russell T Davies assumes the role of showrunner and executive producer. Moreover, Joel Collins, Phil Collinson, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter are also credited as additional executive producers.
In 2025, the second season of “Doctor Who,” starring Jodie Whittaker, will make its debut on Disney+ and BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom.
