Doctor Who fans have a lot to discuss! Disney is no longer involved with the show, but the BBC has confirmed it will continue, with plans for a Christmas special in 2026.
In 2022, Doctor Who expanded its reach in the United States through a partnership with Disney. This collaboration resulted in increased funding for the show and made it available to stream on Disney+ everywhere except the UK and Ireland.
I was so excited when Russell T Davies came back to run the show, and Ncuti Gatwa is fantastic as the Doctor! But honestly, the reaction to the new series has been a bit all over the place – some people love it, others aren’t so sure, and the ratings haven’t been amazing. It’s a bit disappointing, but I’m still hoping it finds its footing.
Disney has stopped airing Doctor Who, and this news came on the same day the BBC revealed a Christmas special is planned for next year.
Russell T Davies will write Doctor Who 2026 Christmas special

The BBC issued a statement trying to soften the blow of some bad news with a bit of positivity. Here’s how they’ve presented the news about Disney leaving:
Doctor Who is returning for a Christmas special in 2026, penned by Russell T Davies. While Disney+ won’t be involved in the next season, the BBC is still dedicated to the show and will share details about future series soon, ensuring the Doctor’s journey continues.
Despite the end of their partnership, Disney+ will still release the upcoming ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’ spinoff.
The upcoming five-part series features Russell Tobey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave, and Alexander Devrient. It centers on the government organization UNIT as they fight the Sea Devils, and is currently scheduled for release in 2026.

Everyone’s wondering who’s going to be the Doctor for the 2026 Christmas special, and while we haven’t heard anything official yet, all signs are pointing to Billie Piper! The way Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor regenerated into her at the end of his last episode definitely makes her the frontrunner in my book.
BBC Drama Director Lindsay Salt expressed gratitude to Disney+ for their excellent partnership and collaboration over the last two seasons, and looks forward to continuing that relationship with the upcoming series, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea.’
Okay, so the BBC has confirmed they’re still totally into Doctor Who – it’s still a huge show for them, which is awesome! And get this – Russell T Davies is writing another Christmas special, coming in 2026! I’m already hyped!
Fans can rest assured that the Doctor will be back, and we’ll share details about the next season soon. The TARDIS will continue to be a key part of the BBC’s programming.
