Many consider this movie to be one of the funniest Christmas comedies ever made. Now, as families rewatch it this holiday season, a doctor is sharing their take on some of the film’s most comical – and cringe-worthy – injuries.
Doctor Mike, a doctor and popular online personality, shared his humorous take on the movie Home Alone in a recent YouTube video. He reacted to famous scenes, explaining the medical side of what was happening. For example, he discussed the scene where Kevin uses aftershave, pointing out that the burning sensation he experiences is real – the micro-tears from shaving make the alcohol sting.
He ran into the wall, causing the shelves and toys to fall on him. “This kind of injury is common with kids,” Dr. Mike noted. “We often see ankle and knee sprains in these situations. Plus, the broken shelves created sharp edges that could cause deep cuts.”
Later in the movie, Kevin faced the burglars trying to break into his house while his family was on vacation in Paris. When they begged him to open the door, he shot one of them with a shotgun. Dr. Mark commented with a mix of laughter and discomfort, guessing the shot hit the man in a very sensitive area and must have been incredibly painful. He explained that the injury could have been serious, potentially causing a dangerous condition called testicular torsion.
Dr. Mike also discussed injuries like slips and falls, and being hit by a flying iron. He also offered advice about burns, explaining that you should use room-temperature water – not cold snow or ice – to treat a burn, as cold temperatures can actually worsen the injury.
One of the most painful moments involved the burglar Marv (Daniel Stern) stepping on a nail on the stairs and tumbling down. A doctor on set cautioned against removing the nail immediately, explaining it could sever an artery. “If you pull it out now, there could be a lot of bleeding,” he explained.
Home Alone’s Holiday Domination Continues in 2025
For 35 years, people have enjoyed watching Home Alone every holiday season. Recently, both Home Alone and its sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, were the most-watched movies on Hulu. The first film has become a beloved Christmas tradition and started a series of six movies.
The movie Home Alone made Macaulay Culkin a star, but he only appeared in the first two films. Later Home Alone movies featured different lead actors, like Mike Weinberg in Home Alone 4, Christian Martyn and Joelle Ferland in Home Alone: The Holiday Heist, and Archie Yates in Home Sweet Home Alone.
Home Alone is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
