Ghost of Yotei is a highly awaited game from Sony, continuing the story of the popular 2020 title, Ghost of Tsushima. The new game builds upon Tsushima in many ways – including how it plays, the story it tells, and its artistic direction. But, since not everyone knows the story of Jin Sakai, a question arises: Do you need to know Ghost of Tsushima to understand what’s happening in Ghost of Yotei?

Do you need to know Ghost of Tsushima?

The short answer is no. Those who haven’t played the story of Ghost of Tsushima will have just as much fun with Ghost of Yotei. Although the new game tells its story in a similar style and takes place in the same setting, the Mongol invasion in Tsushima occurred *before* the events of Yotei, meaning the two games have no connection to each other.
Ghost of Yotei takes place in a different part of Japan and is set around 300 years after the events of the first game. The story of Tsushima unfolds in the latter part of the 13th century on the Tsushima islands, which are located in southern Japan. Ghost of Yotei, however, is set in Ezo, in the north, at the beginning of the 17th century. Because of this, we won’t see any characters from Tsushima appear in the sequel. Unlike the first game’s focus on a Mongol invasion, Yotei centers on a classic revenge story, following the protagonist Atsu as she seeks out those who ruined her life.
This doesn’t mean the team at Sucker Punch has forgotten about their earlier work, though. If you look closely, you’ll find some small details and Easter Eggs for players who remember Ghost of Tsushima. Be sure to explore carefully, particularly in the final area on the Oshima coast. One of the side quests there pays homage to the previous game and its main character, Jin Sakai – fans of the original will really enjoy it.
