Do Not Fear, The Conjuring Franchise Isn’t Really Ending After Last Rites

I’ve been getting spooked by The Conjuring universe for over ten years now, ever since the first movie came out in 2013. I’ve really enjoyed following Ed and Lorraine Warren – Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga really bring them to life! – through all the sequels, and I’ve even checked out the spin-off and prequel stories too.

By 2025, The Conjuring: Last Rites was marketed as the final film in the series. The title itself suggested a conclusive ending to the Warrens’ story. The movie wrapped things up with a positive outcome for Ed and Lorraine, feeling like a natural conclusion to the entire universe of films.

The director of the latest film, Michael Chaves, has stated in interviews that this is the last chapter of The Conjuring series, saying, “It is done. There’s no other Conjuring movies. It is absolutely the end.” While his words seem conclusive, that’s not actually true – the franchise will continue.

More The Conjuring Movies Are Already In Development

Even though Luis Chaves claims otherwise, sources say more movies in The Conjuring series are in the works. New Line Cinema is reportedly starting to develop a new prequel to The Conjuring, which will be a standalone story separate from the Annabelle films. Details about the plot and characters are still unknown.

A prequel to The Conjuring could explore many different storylines. Since Last Rites already introduced actors who portrayed younger versions of Ed and Lorraine Warren, they could reprise those roles to show the couple’s earlier days as paranormal investigators.

The series could benefit from a prequel that introduces new demons or supernatural creatures. The ending of Last Rites hinted at several possible stories to explore. One option could be a prequel focusing on the mirror from The Conjuring and a new, currently unnamed demon. Another idea would be to tell the origin story of the Axe Man from the fourth film.

Besides making prequels, the world of The Conjuring could continue after the end of Last Rites. The films seem to be setting up Judy Warren and her husband as the main characters for future movies. Plus, many of the original actors have hinted they’d be willing to return for more installments.

Judy’s work as a paranormal investigator opens up many possibilities for future stories within the franchise. Because Ed and Lorraine Warren lived much longer lives than depicted in the film The Last Rites, there’s potential for actors Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson to reprise their roles in some way as well.

Even though director Michael Chaves has hinted at it being finished, it’s not surprising to hear about potential plans to continue the franchise. New Line executive Richard Brenner previously stated that the latest film wasn’t the final installment, but rather the conclusion of the first chapter, implying more movies are in the works.

The future of Phase Two of the Conjuring universe is still uncertain. However, it’s clear that New Line Cinema is committed to continuing the franchise. Reports suggest they’re even prepared to move forward without James Wan, the creator of the series, due to disagreements over payment for his continued involvement.

We can expect to see more Conjuring movies in the future, and there’s also a TV series in development for HBO Max. This series will likely be part of the next phase of the franchise, helping to maintain interest while New Line and Warner Bros. decide what they want to do with future films in this universe.

The Conjuring: Last Rites Was Too Successful To Let The Universe Die

Although there may have been initial plans for Last Rites to conclude the Conjuring universe, the film’s success proved those plans wouldn’t stick. The strong audience turnout – and how much money the film made – clearly showed continued interest in the franchise, meaning another installment was likely, whether it came in a couple of years or much later.

The horror film Last Rites was a huge success, exceeding all expectations with an $84 million opening weekend in the US – a record for the series and one of the best openings ever for a horror movie. It continued to perform strongly after that, earning a total of $482 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in The Conjuring franchise so far.

Movie Box Office
The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025) $482 million
The Nun (2018) $366 million
The Conjuring 2 (2016) $322 million
The Conjuring (2013) $320 million
Annabelle: Creation (2017) $306 million
The Nun II (2023) $269 million
Annabelle (2014) $257 million
Annabelle Comes Home (2019) $231 million
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021) $206 million

Before the release of Last Rites, it seemed unlikely that New Line and Warner Bros. would end the hugely successful horror franchise, which had already earned $2.2 billion. However, after Last Rites boosted the total earnings to $2.7 billion, it became clear the studios would eventually find a way to keep the series going.

If audiences continue to enjoy these films in theaters, New Line and Warner Bros. will keep making more movies in The Conjuring universe. The success of Last Rites, which earned nearly $500 million worldwide, ensures that we’ll see future installments in some form.
