YouTube TV is losing an estimated $4 million each day because it doesn’t currently offer ESPN and other channels owned by Disney.
Okay, so as more and more people ditch cable, and every streaming service seems to have its own sports rights, it’s getting seriously expensive to keep up with all my favorite teams. I’m finding I’m paying a ton just to watch every game!
So, YouTube TV has basically been my go-to for watching all the sports I love – everything from baseball to hockey, you name it. But things got really frustrating recently. On October 30th, ESPN and a bunch of other Disney channels suddenly disappeared from the service, which was a huge blow because I rely on it for pretty much all my sports viewing!
Disney sharply criticized YouTube TV, stating the service was depriving its customers of popular content. Disney claims Google, which owns YouTube TV, is unwilling to pay a reasonable price for channels like ESPN and ABC. As a result, viewers were unable to watch college football and NFL games for a weekend.

YouTube responded to threats of cancellations from over 20% of its subscribers by offering to restore the affected channels and provide compensation. However, claiming this compensation isn’t straightforward and involves a multi-step process.
According to a report by Morgan Stanley analysts, the recent blackout is costing Disney approximately $4.3 million in revenue each day, and potentially up to $30 million per week.
Analysts believe the problem will be fixed by the end of the week, November 16th, potentially allowing viewers to watch college and NFL football games as scheduled.
According to Variety, both YouTube TV and Disney are being negatively affected by the disagreement. However, a YouTube TV representative disputed a report claiming that cancellations have increased by 24% since the blackout began.
Although losing subscribers is never ideal, it hasn’t been a major issue and doesn’t match what this survey discovered, according to a statement given to Variety.
YouTube TV has been in similar disputes in the past 12 months, most notably with Paramount Plus.
