Star Wars is a massive global franchise, and Disney has been working to maintain its popularity with live-action series on Disney+ since the sequel trilogy concluded. Starting with The Mandalorian in 2019, Disney released at least one new Star Wars show each year, increasing to two shows annually in both 2023 and 2024. However, no new series have been released since the finale of Andor‘s second season in May 2025.
Currently, the only confirmed live-action Star Wars series in production is season two of Ahsoka, and it likely won’t be released until after The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters in May 2026. This slower pace is partly because Disney is prioritizing the two new Star Wars movies, but it could also be a response to criticism of shows like The Book of Boba Fett and The Acolyte. However, fans craving live-action fantasy can look forward to Eragon, a new series coming to Disney+.
Eragon Can Recapture the Magic of Star Wars
It might not be obvious, but the upcoming Eragon series and the Star Wars galaxy actually have some similarities. The show is based on Christopher Paolini’s popular young adult fantasy novel, Eragon, the first book in The Inheritance Cycle, which features dragons and their riders. A movie adaptation of Eragon was made in 2006, but it wasn’t well-received by critics or audiences and didn’t capture the spirit of the book. This new Disney series aims to be a more accurate and faithful adaptation of the original story.
The story of The Inheritance Cycle shares many parallels with the original Star Wars trilogy, which author Christopher Paolini has openly admitted was a significant influence. Similar to Luke Skywalker, the main character, Eragon, was a farm boy raised by his aunt and uncle, unaware of his true parentage. The adventure begins when he finds a hidden object – a dragon egg, in Eragon’s case – sent by a princess to protect it from a powerful, evil empire (similar to the droid carrying the Death Star plans in Star Wars).
Both characters were taught the traditions of a fading warrior culture and went on to become heroes in revolts against their empires after saving a princess. The second book in the series, Brisingr, even equipped Eragon with a powerful blue sword reminiscent of Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber. While some of these similarities likely stem from both Christopher Paolini and George Lucas using the familiar framework of a classic hero’s story, others are remarkably detailed.
Star Wars Has Always Featured Elements of Fantasy
Beyond the story itself, The Inheritance Cycle explores similar ideas to Star Wars, like characters growing up, dealing with their family history, and trying to help villains change instead of just defeating them. While it’s different from Star Wars in terms of setting – swapping lasers and spaceships for dragons and magic – these core themes make the two stories surprisingly similar.
In the commentary for Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, George Lucas explained that Star Wars isn’t really science fiction. He described it as a space opera—a blend of science fiction and fantasy. Even though the prequel films try to explain it scientifically, the Force ultimately feels more like magic than a concept rooted in science.
As a huge movie buff, I’ve seen the Star Wars comparison thrown around a lot when people talk about Eragon, usually as a way to dismiss it as unoriginal, or even a copy. But honestly, I think that’s really unfair. If you look closely, Eragon – and the Inheritance Cycle books it’s based on – has plenty of unique characters, plot points, and world-building details that Star Wars just doesn’t have. In fact, as the series went on, it really found its own voice and moved further and further away from those initial inspirations. It definitely became something special in its own right.
All stories build on what came before, and even Star Wars is no exception. The plot of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope was largely inspired by earlier works, and its visual style drew heavily from sci-fi serials like Flash Gordon. Eragon continued this tradition of storytelling. If the new Eragon show becomes a hit, it could spark a new wave of science fiction and fantasy writing, much like Star Wars did.
