Warning: This article includes spoilers for Percy Jackson & The Olympians season 2, episode 4!
The fourth episode of Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians clearly shows why it’s a stronger adaptation than the 2013 film, Sea of Monsters. With a dedicated fanbase, Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson books set a high standard for any attempt to bring them to the screen. Director Chris Columbus previously tried to do just that.
The first two Percy Jackson movies weren’t very popular with critics or fans – while they had some fun moments, they strayed too far from the books. Both Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters received negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, so when Disney announced a fresh start, many people were doubtful. Thankfully, the first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians was a big hit!
The real challenge for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians show will be season 2, since The Sea of Monsters story is much larger in scale and more imaginative than The Lightning Thief. However, after the first four episodes, the Percy Jackson TV series has already demonstrated why it’s a stronger adaptation than The Sea of Monsters could have been.
Percy Jackson & The Olympians Uses Practical Effects While The Sea of Monsters Used CGI
The movie Sea of Monsters relied too much on computer-generated effects, which ended up being a major distraction. It had an artificial look that prevented viewers from fully connecting with the story. Whenever the plot started to draw you in, the special effects pulled you right back out. In contrast, season 2 of Percy Jackson & the Olympians aimed for a bigger and more expansive feel.
Instead of relying heavily on digital effects, the second season of Percy Jackson & The Olympians prioritizes real-world elements like physical sets, props, and filming in actual locations. For example, the production team built large-scale models of the Princess Andromeda and Clarisse’s warship to make the show feel more authentic.
As a huge fan of historical dramas, I was really impressed with how realistic the sea scenes looked in this show. Apparently, the team behind the visuals on Black Sails – which, by the way, was a fantastic show that more people should watch – came on board to handle all the water effects, ships, and sails. And honestly, you can tell. They clearly knew what they were doing, and it really brought the story to life in a way that felt incredibly authentic.
Percy Jackson Season 2 Episode 4 Shows Why Practical Effects Were The Right Way To Go
While the show Percy Jackson and the Olympians has used practical effects before, episode 4 of season 2 really showcases them. The episode heavily features Clarisse’s warship, and it’s obvious the actors are interacting with actual, physical sets.
The water effects in the show were particularly impressive. Whenever the characters in Percy Jackson get wet from rain or sprays of water, you can clearly see the actors are actually getting splashed with real water.
This episode is incredibly engaging, drawing viewers right into the story as Percy and his friends journey into the Sea of Monsters. It truly feels like you’re experiencing the adventure alongside the Percy Jackson characters.
