Disney’s MCU-Breaking Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Release Backfires

As a huge Marvel fan, I have to say Disney really stumbled with the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. After the massive success of Avengers: Endgame six years ago – which wrapped up the Infinity Saga so brilliantly – everyone was excited for the Russo brothers to return and finish another big story. But honestly, this new trailer feels… different. It’s not a simple ‘good guys versus Thanos’ situation, and it’s a lot more complex than anything we’ve seen before, which, in this case, doesn’t quite work. They really deviated from what made their trailer releases successful in the past, and it feels like it’s backfiring.

Avengers: Doomsday has a big job: to finish the Multiverse Saga, which has been much more difficult than the story that came before it. The plot is also more complex than the Infinity Saga. Fortunately, Marvel Studios is relying on some of its most talented people – like the Russo brothers and Robert Downey Jr. – to make the movie a success, which is building a lot of excitement.

As a huge fan, I’m a little disappointed with how Disney’s been promoting Avengers: Doomsday so far. It feels like their trailer strategy hasn’t quite hit the mark.

Disney Attaching Avengers: Doomsday’s Trailer To Avatar Made It More Vulnerable To Leaks

For 14 years, Marvel Studios has always released trailers for their Avengers movies online, choosing not to show them in theaters alongside other big films. However, that’s changing with the next Avengers movie, Doomsday. The first trailer will now premiere in theaters before the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash on December 19th.

This method isn’t inherently flawed – in fact, most major Hollywood films have used it for years. Problems arise, however, when details about the project begin to surface prematurely.

Just days before the release of James Cameron’s new Avatar movie, parts and even the complete Avengers: Doomsday trailer have appeared online. Although the video quality isn’t great, the fact that it leaked without permission from Disney and Marvel Studios is concerning.

If they had released the trailer the same way they always do for Avengers movies, this problem wouldn’t have happened. They usually keep everything in-house, but sending copies to theaters meant more people had access, increasing the chances of a leak.

With so many people having already touched the leaked material, it will be hard to find whoever shared it without permission, especially if Disney decides to pursue legal action.

Disney Needs To Fully Commit To Avengers: Doomsday’s Vision

Disney now needs to fully support Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios’ plan for the next Avengers movie, Doomsday. While the Multiverse Saga hasn’t gone as smoothly as the Infinity Saga, and some missteps were made, Disney should trust that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has earned enough fan loyalty to make people want to see it. Overreacting to recent issues could actually hurt the film’s chances of success.

The unusual and surprisingly successful announcement of the Avengers: Doomsday cast – using actual filming chairs – proves that audiences are still invested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios simply needs to refocus on strong storytelling going forward. With the Russo brothers directing, Avengers: Doomsday has the potential to be a major improvement and a step in the right direction.
