The studio may have faced controversy over the years, but it’s undeniably created some truly iconic films and shows. For many, that legacy began with the huge success of High School Musical in the 2000s.
The High School Musical movie series began in 2006 with the first film. It was very popular, leading to two sequels and even a TV show. Recently, after celebrating its 20th anniversary, High School Musical unexpectedly returned to the top of the charts on Disney+, as reported by FlixPatrol.
The Disney Channel movie High School Musical first aired on January 20, 2006, and recently experienced a resurgence in popularity. While it currently ranks 14th worldwide, it quickly climbed to number two in the U.S. upon its initial release, surpassing 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water and landing just behind the current top movie, Tron: Ares.
The High School Musical soundtrack also charted well internationally. It reached number eight in Australia (rising to seventh the next day), fourth in Canada, and seventh in New Zealand. In Italy and San Marino, it entered the charts at number eight.
Directed by Kenny Ortega and written by Peter Barsocchini, High School Musical quickly became a worldwide success. The story centers on Troy Bolton, a popular basketball player, who discovers a passion for singing when he meets Gabriella Montez, a bright and talented new student. Together, they decide to try out for the lead roles in the school musical, even though their friends don’t think they should.
Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Alyson Reed, Corbin Bleu, and Monique Coleman all played the main characters in the movie.
When High School Musical first aired, it attracted 7.7 million viewers, making it the most-watched premiere in the network’s history. The movie’s soundtrack also became a hit, topping the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, and the song “Breaking Free” reached number 4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
The movie was followed by two sequels, High School Musical 2 and High School Musical 3: Senior Year, released in 2007 and 2008. A television series also aired for four seasons, and the story has been adapted for international audiences and the stage.
The Cast of High School Musical Addressed Its Massive Anniversary
High School Musical became a beloved classic, launching the careers of its stars – Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale – who all went on to find success in other roles. This also helped audiences connect with and appreciate the actors themselves.
In a recent interview with People magazine, Zac Efron reflected on the 20th anniversary of the movie, saying they had a blast making it and were learning along the way. He expressed his surprise and gratitude that it still resonates with audiences today, and that a new generation is discovering and enjoying it as well.
Of course, when you create something, you hope people will like it,” Tisdale shared. “But I never expected High School Musical to remain so popular for so long. It was a truly transformative experience for everyone involved.”
Corbin Bleu shared that the musical’s rapid success was overwhelming when he was young. He explained that being thrown into such a whirlwind before his brain was fully developed presented many challenges. However, he also said it created opportunities for his future, including his Broadway career, and helped him build lasting friendships with the people he worked with.
Despite any challenges, the director was confident the film would be a huge success. They recalled being overwhelmed during the filming of the final musical number, “We’re All In This Together,” saying that seeing the entire scene unfold made them realize that with strong marketing from Disney, the film could be unstoppable.
