Disney’s Biggest Sci-Fi Flop of 2025 Is a Streaming Hit Now

Despite initially performing poorly in theaters in 2025, Disney’s Tron: Ares is now a hit on Disney+. The film is attracting a large audience and is currently outperforming other titles on the streaming service. While it received mixed reviews when it first came out in theaters on October 10, 2025, it’s finding success with viewers online.

Tron: Ares finds major success after streaming on Disney+

I have to admit, I was surprised to see how well Tron: Ares is doing now. After its initial theatrical release in 2025, it really didn’t perform well at the box office – it was considered one of Disney’s biggest flops. But now, it’s absolutely dominating streaming! As of January 11, 2026, it’s the number one movie on pretty much every chart, including FlixPatrol, where it has a popularity score of 740. That’s incredible when you consider it’s beating out massive hits like Avatar: The Way of Water (at #2 with a score of 618), the original Avatar itself, and even Zootopia. It’s really turned things around!

When it came out in theaters, the movie made $142.2 million, even though it cost between $180 and $200 million to produce.

Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 53% rating, suggesting it wasn’t well-received. However, audiences enjoyed it more, giving it an 84% score. Metacritic assigned the movie a score of 48 from critics, and users rated it 6.2 out of 10. This means critics found the film mixed or average, while most viewers liked it.

Tron: Ares is the latest movie in the Tron series, which began in 1982 with the original film starring Jeff Bridges and directed by Steven Lisberger. This new installment continues the story from 2010’s Tron: Legacy, also directed by Joseph Kosinski.

The movie tells the story of an artificial intelligence that comes from a virtual world called The Grid, which audiences have seen in earlier films. The story centers on Ares (Jared Leto), who embarks on a risky mission after arriving in the real world.

Joachim Rønning, known for directing movies like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, was the director of this film. Jesse Wigutow wrote the screenplay and collaborated with David DiGilio on the story.
