Ella McCay, a new dramedy film, will soon be available for streaming, giving it a second chance to reach viewers. While it premiered in theaters on December 12th, released by 20th Century Studios (owned by Disney), it didn’t perform well, earning only $4.56 million despite costing $35 million to make.
After a disappointing run in theaters, the movie Ella McCay will be available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu starting February 5th. Viewers can also purchase or rent it digitally beginning January 27th, and it will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on March 3rd.
I’m so excited about Ella McCay! It’s a new film by the incredible James L. Brooks – you might know him from Terms of Endearment, he’s won three Oscars! The movie stars Emma Mackey as Ella McCay, and she plays this really driven, hopeful lieutenant governor who unexpectedly becomes governor. It seems like a really interesting story about how she juggles all the pressure of her new job with the craziness of her family life. I can’t wait to see it!
Alongside Emma Mackey in the lead role, the film Ella McCay features a stellar cast including Academy Award winner Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Lowden, Kumail Nanjiani, Emmy Award winner Ayo Edebiri (known from The Bear), Spike Fearn, Julie Kavner, Rebecca Hall, Oscar nominee Albert Brooks (Broadcast News), three-time Oscar nominee Woody Harrelson, Becky Ann Baker, Sheetal Sheth, Joey Brooks, and seven-time Emmy winner Tracey Ullman.
The movie Ella McCay wasn’t successful with audiences or critics. It received a low 23% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers noting that while the film aimed to be inspiring, it felt unfocused and struggled to balance humor and seriousness. Ultimately, most critics found little about the movie to be memorable or effective.
While not widely seen, Ella McCay received a modestly positive response from moviegoers (57% audience score), who found its main character appealing. However, the film’s earnest but old-fashioned style held it back, diminishing the impact of its rebellious themes and preventing it from fully realizing its potential.
James L. Brooks created beloved and successful films like Terms of Endearment (1983), Broadcast News (1987), and As Good as It Gets (1997). However, his style of filmmaking doesn’t seem to resonate with today’s moviegoers.
Hopefully, Ella McCay will connect with a wider audience through streaming services, as that’s where thoughtful, character-driven dramas like those made by James L. Brooks often find success.
