Disneyland is shifting its approach to Star Wars at Galaxy’s Edge, focusing more on classic elements. Instead of futuristic sounds and experiences, the park will now feature characters from the original Star Wars trilogy and music by John Williams. This means a move away from a modern, bustling spaceport feel and towards a more nostalgic experience, prioritizing encounters with beloved characters and a familiar atmosphere.
Originally, the company carefully established Galaxy’s Edge within a specific point in the Star Wars timeline – Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu, between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. Now, Imagineering is playing with time, allowing characters from different eras to appear. Guests might see Han Solo near the Millennium Falcon or Oga’s Cantina, Luke Skywalker shopping in the marketplace, and even Darth Vader causing trouble for dads wearing t-shirts.
This news arrives at a tricky moment for the Star Wars franchise. While Andor received widespread critical acclaim, other recent Star Wars shows and movies haven’t been huge hits. There are new stories on the way – The Mandalorian and Grogu is coming in May, and Shawn Levy’s Starfighter next year – but the storyline involving the Skywalker-Ren family seems to be finished. Adam Driver recently revealed that Disney cancelled a planned solo film about Kylo Ren, directed by Steven Soderbergh. He explained that Lucasfilm loved the script and the concept, but Bob Iger and Alan Bergman rejected it because they didn’t believe it made sense for Ben Solo to still be alive. Driver jokingly questioned Disney’s consistency with its own timeline, given that Darth Vader was already dead in the Galaxy’s Edge theme park, suggesting a more relaxed approach to continuity might be entertaining.
