Disney has formally approved the production of a fresh streaming series based on Shia LeBeouf’s seminal work, “Holes”. Notably, this new adaptation will introduce one significant deviation from the original storyline.

Ever since its launch, Disney+ has consistently expanded its offerings by introducing a continuous flow of original content. Although much of this original content is connected to popular franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars, or classic animated series, Disney occasionally ventures away from this pattern.

Lately, Disney has been delving into their trove of untapped ideas, and the most recent gem they’ve unearthed is a reboot of the 2003 movie “Holes” as a fresh TV series on their streaming platform.

To begin with, Variety initially announced that Disney has commissioned a pilot for a fresh take on the “Holes” series, which is inspired by the 1998 novel. Although the book and movie primarily revolve around the character of Stanley Yelnats, portrayed by Shia LeBouf, this Disney+ adaptation will offer a unique twist to the storyline.

New Holes series on Disney+ to feature a different protagonist

According to the show’s description, a modern adaptation of Louis Sachar’s popular 1998 book features a young girl being confined to a strict detention facility, where the stern warden makes the inmates excavate holes for an unknown reason.

In the updated version of the book and movie, instead of Stanley Yelnats the Fourth as the main character, we’ll have a female lead taking his place.

This new version deviates significantly from the initial storyline, as it’s set in a character-shaping camp for troubled teenage boys at Camp Greenlake. At this preliminary stage, there’s no information about whether characters like Hector Zeroni or Theodore ‘Armpit’ Johnson will be swapped with female counterparts, or if the camp itself will become co-ed.

In charge of directing the latest Disney+ Original is Executive Producer, Drew Goddard, renowned for his work on notable productions such as Cloverfield and The Martian. His confidence in this fresh interpretation of Holes is evident, and the team behind it shares his enthusiasm.

Goddard shared with Variety, “They’ve really managed to encapsulate Louis Sachar’s distinctive essence.” He added, “Revealing too much of what they plan next would ruin the surprise.
