Disney, Scorsese and Spielberg Storyboards Unveiled by Prada Foundation for ‘A Kind of Language’ Exhibition

50 renowned filmmakers and animators such as Martin Scorsese, Hayao Miyazaki, Federico Fellini, Steven Spielberg, Wes Anderson, and Alfred Hitchcock will be showcasing their storyboards at an exhibit arranged by the Prada Foundation in Italy.

The exhibition named “A Kind of Language: Storyboards and Other Cinematic Representations” will debut on January 30 at the Prada Foundation’s Osservatorio branch located in Milan, followed by a move to Prada’s Rong Zhai cultural center in Shanghai, slated for November 2025.

An exhibit titled “Prada Foundation ‘Storyboards'” is being curated by Melissa Harris, U.S. academic and editor-at-large of Aperture Foundation. This show features over eight hundred mood boards, drawings, sketches, and other items made between the late 1920s and 2024. The exhibit aims to provide an immersive experience by replicating a storyboard artist’s workspace with drafting tables and an open layout.

The “Prada Foundation ‘Storyboards'” exhibition, featuring over eight hundred mood boards, drawings, sketches, and other artifacts created between the late 1920s and 2024, is being curated by Melissa Harris. As editor-at-large of Aperture Foundation in the U.S., she has designed this show to offer a hands-on experience that mirrors the workspace of a storyboard artist, complete with drafting tables and an open layout.

Storyboarding is a crucial step for many, as it allows them to sketch out scenes and plan their fluctuations. This process can aid film teams in understanding character relationships, devising ways to progress the plot, and figuring out how to express the core of a specific scene,” Harris explained. “It also serves as a tool for problem-solving, such as when a character or physical interaction appears unconvincing. Furthermore, storyboarding can offer visual cues for actors,” she continued.

In addition to the illustrious filmmakers already mentioned, this show also highlights the storyboards of other cinematic legends such as Pedro Almodóvar, Ingmar Bergman, Bernardo Bertolucci, Luis Buñuel, Charlie Chaplin, Sofia Coppola, Cecil B. de Mille, Jonathan Demme, Terry Gilliam, Jean-Luc Godard, Renny Harlin, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Agnès Varda, Wim Wenders, and Akira Kurosawa.

For quite some time, Prada has maintained strong connections with the film industry. Not only have they been collaborating with the independently-run Venice section of the Venice Film Festival for many years to produce the “Miu Miu Women’s Tales” series, a collection of short films directed by women, but they have also been increasing their involvement in cinema through their foundation. Established in 2015 and located in an old refurbished distillery designed by renowned architect Rem Koolhaas, the foundation features an art center that includes Bar Luce, a bar designed by Wes Anderson.
