As a huge fan of both Marvel and sci-fi, I’ve been really impressed with Loki on Disney+. Honestly, it’s not just a good superhero show, it’s one of the best science fiction series they have! And Disney+ has a lot of great sci-fi to choose from – everything from all the Star Wars shows, to newer stuff like Alien: Earth on FX, and even classics like Firefly and The X-Files. They really cover all the bases.
Disney+ offers a range of sci-fi shows, including those connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While some, like the Agatha All Along series, blend fantasy elements, many feature typical sci-fi themes like advanced technology and space exploration. However, one MCU show is particularly outstanding and is widely considered one of the best sci-fi series available on Disney+.
Loki Is A Perfect Sci-Fi Show
The TV show Loki is nearly flawless science fiction, delivering everything a sci-fi enthusiast could hope for. The series centers on Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston), Thor’s brother, who is apprehended by the Time Variance Authority after stealing the Tesseract during Avengers. This organization safeguards the ‘sacred timeline,’ which Loki has disrupted, and gives him an opportunity to fix things by tracking down another version of himself.
That summary offers a glimpse into the complex storyline of Loki. The show is packed with time travel, different realities, and a fascinating take on law enforcement within the sci-fi genre. However, the summary only hints at the show’s depth, particularly as the second season raised the stakes and explored more intricate science fiction concepts.
Why Loki Worked Better Than Most Disney+ MCU Shows
Many fans consider Loki the best series Marvel has offered on Disney+, and with good reason. Like Andor did for Star Wars, Loki took a big risk that really paid off. Both shows are surprisingly serious and tackle complex themes, despite being set within typically fun and action-packed universes.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has experimented with shows like WandaVision, Loki stands out as particularly ambitious. It’s packed with complex, intelligent science fiction ideas, exploring themes of destiny and free will without sacrificing its core story for jokes or flashy action. Loki feels genuinely serious and grown-up in a way that other series, like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, don’t quite achieve.
What truly makes Loki stand out is its dedication to being unique, but it also excels in other key areas. The show is incredibly well-made, and features outstanding performances from the entire cast, including Tom Hiddleston, Ke Huy Quan, and Owen Wilson. Loki has set a new standard for quality among all Marvel television series.
Even Non-MCU Fans Can Enjoy Loki
One of the main reasons Loki stands out as the best Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) show so far is its broad appeal. While the show is connected to major MCU events like Avengers and Avengers: Endgame, you don’t need to be a dedicated Marvel fan or spend hours learning backstory to enjoy it.
The show Loki does a good job of explaining everything you need to know as it goes along. Even if you only know a little about the Avengers and that Loki used to be a bad guy, you’ll be able to understand the story and the Time Variance Authority (TVA) by the end of the first episode. There are a few references that might not make sense if you haven’t seen all the Marvel movies, but you don’t need to be an expert on things like Guardians of the Galaxy to enjoy the show.
Even the most complex parts of Loki, involving Kang the Conquerer and his different versions, are fully explained within the show itself. While Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania provides extra details, Kang first appeared in Loki, meaning you won’t miss any essential backstory. The show is enjoyable, exciting, and makes you think, even if you’re not familiar with Marvel at all. This makes Loki one of the best science fiction shows on Disney+.
