Okay, so I just finished watching Tron: Ares on Disney+, and seriously, if you haven’t seen it yet, drop everything! It’s easily a 10/10 movie and a fantastic addition to the Tron saga. Basically, it’s the third film in the series and the story is wild – these AI programs from inside the Grid are somehow escaping into our world. The main focus is on this program called Ares, played by Jared Leto, who’s a super powerful combat program that goes completely off the rails. It’s a great reminder to revisit this whole franchise – you won’t regret it!
The movie is doing very well on Disney+, currently ranking as the most popular title globally and reaching number one in 42 countries. While it’s popular with viewers, critics haven’t been as impressed – it currently has a 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite its success, some viewers feel it doesn’t quite live up to another great science fiction film also available on streaming.
Tron: Ares Is A Reminder To Check Out Tron: Legacy
While Tron Ares is gaining popularity, many fans consider 2010’s Tron: Legacy to be a superior and more recent addition to the Tron series. The film picks up twenty years after the events of the original 1982 Tron, with Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) mysteriously disappearing. His son, Sam (Garrett Hedlund), starts searching for him after receiving a message from within the digital world known as the Grid.
Compared to the other Tron films, the second one strikes the best balance between what audiences expect from modern movies and the original charm of the first Tron, which became a cultural phenomenon. It features updated visual effects, including a digitally younger Jeff Bridges as the villain Clu, while still staying true to the spirit of the first film’s exciting story.
Despite receiving mixed reviews – with a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – Tron: Legacy was a profitable film. It grossed $409.9 million worldwide on a $120 million budget, performing slightly better in theaters than Tron: Ares. Importantly, Legacy continued the story directly from the original, unlike the more recent third film.

Unlike previous films, Tron: Ares tells a mostly self-contained story, aiming to be both enjoyable for longtime fans and easy for new viewers to understand. While it largely stands on its own, the ending does connect back to the events of Tron: Legacy, acknowledging the franchise’s past.
With the current popularity of Tron: Ares on Disney+, it’s worth remembering that two other films in the Tron series also deserve attention. Tron: Legacy, in particular, tells a story that feels fresh and contemporary while still connecting to the original movie and fitting within the established timeline.
