A classic spy series is heading to Disney+. Originally airing on FX in 2013, The Americans follows Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Philip Jennings (Matthew Rhys), a married couple living a normal suburban life in Falls Church, Virginia, while secretly working as KGB spies.
Many consider The Americans to be one of the greatest spy thrillers ever made, and it frequently appears on lists of the best TV shows of all time. Though it ended in 2018, a remake was recently announced, and Disney is optimistic about bringing the series to a new generation.
The Americans Is Getting A Korean Remake On Disney+
Disney+ is creating a new version of the hit show The Americans, but with a twist! Instead of being about American spies, this version, called The Koreans, will follow a similar story set in Korea and will star Lee Byung-hun and Han Ji-min. Eric Schrier, a Disney executive who originally helped develop The Americans for FX, announced the project (according to The Hollywood Reporter).
Byung-hun and Ji-min will star as North Korean spies who pose as a married couple living in South Korea during the 1990s. Their story, titled The Koreans, unfolds during a period of significant change on the Korean peninsula – South Korea was experiencing modernization and a move towards democracy, while North Korea was becoming more controlling.
Disney+ Has High Hopes For Its Remake Of The Americans
Disney+ is very optimistic about this new series, and reports indicate it has a substantial budget. This marks Disney’s first time creating local-language versions of one of its original shows, and it appears to have originated from a creative idea, not just a company directive to capitalize on established brands.
Schrier has a strong personal connection to the original The Americans, so he wasn’t initially planning a remake. But the story idea was compelling, and Disney’s existing ties to Korean content made the timing ideal. Plus, the talented cast shows that both Schrier and Disney are committed to making this remake a quality production.
Han Ji-min and Lee Hee-joon are well-known Korean actors, but Lee Byung-hun is generating the most buzz. He’s a huge star in Korea and has gained international recognition, especially after playing the Front Man in Squid Game and Yoo Man-soo in No Other Choice.
What Made The Americans So Good
While a large budget and well-known actors aren’t enough, the new Korean drama hopes to achieve the same critical and popular success as The Americans. A key to The Americans‘ success was its deliberate pacing, carefully developing storylines and characters before advancing the plot.
While The Americans is an exciting spy story, its core is actually the complex relationships within a family and the psychological toll of living a life built on deception. This kind of compelling drama – focusing on family and the weight of lies – could work just as well with a story set on a divided Korean peninsula, but it would require skillful writing.
