Disney+ Might’ve Just Canonized Marvel’s Most Forgettable Show

Marvel Studios is usually very secretive about whether its TV shows outside of the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are officially part of the story. However, the fourth episode of Wonder Man seems to have made a significant connection to the larger universe. By introducing the character Doorman – and, crucially, the Darkforce and the Darkforce Dimension – Disney+ could be bringing one of Marvel’s lesser-known shows back into the spotlight and making it relevant to the ongoing MCU narrative.

This episode of Wonder Man explains why superheroes aren’t usually cast in movies and TV shows. It shifts focus from Simon Williams’ story to tell the strange and sad history of DeMarr Davis, who became the popular superhero actor known as Doorman.

What’s really got Marvel fans buzzing is DeMarr’s change, and they’re drawing links to an older, little-known Marvel series, sparking debate about whether that show is officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Cloak & Dagger’s Darkforce Connection Explained

Warning – The rest of this article contains spoilers for Wonder Man.

In the fourth episode of Wonder Man, the enigmatic Darkforce officially enters the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. It appears as a thick, black liquid oozing from a Roxxon dumpster in a dark alley. When DeMarr Davis comes into contact with this strange substance, he’s pulled into the Darkforce Dimension. He returns with new abilities: he can now pass through solid objects and serve as a portal between different places.

Though recently introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Darkforce has appeared in Marvel TV shows before. The series Cloak & Dagger centered its entire story around it. In the 2018-2019 Freeform show, Tyrone Johnson (played by Aubrey Joseph) gained the ability to control the Darkforce after an accident involving the Roxxon Gulf Platform. This incident connected him to the Darkforce Dimension, giving him powers like teleportation, shadow control, and the ability to pull others into a dark, empty space.

The connections between Wonder Man and Cloak & Dagger seem intentional. Both stories link back to Roxxon, a company that’s been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a while. In both cases, the characters gain their powers through accidental exposure, and the Darkforce Dimension is presented as a distinct and unusual realm.

The Darkforce has shown up in both Agent Carter and Agents of SHIELD, two Marvel shows on ABC that fans constantly debate whether they fully fit into the main storyline. Throughout these appearances, the Darkforce has consistently been portrayed as unstable, corrupting, and difficult to predict. Wonder Man stays true to this established portrayal rather than trying to change it.

Could Wonder Man Make Cloak & Dagger MCU Canon?

Instead of reinventing the Darkforce with a new backstory, the show Wonder Man simply presents it without explaining where it comes from or how it works. This approach lets the Darkforce as seen in the MCU coexist with the version from older Marvel TV shows without causing any contradictions. This creates a unique opportunity to potentially include characters like Cloak & Dagger in the MCU, something Marvel Studios hasn’t done before.

If the Darkforce operates consistently across different stories, then Cloak’s abilities don’t require any explanation – they already make sense within the existing framework. This doesn’t necessarily mean Cloak will appear in a future Avengers film, but it does indicate Marvel Studios is increasingly willing to recognize and reference its earlier television series in understated ways.

For a long time, the show Cloak & Dagger existed in a peculiar spot – it had a dedicated fanbase and explored interesting themes, but it was mostly overlooked once Marvel Studios started making TV shows. However, the fourth episode of Wonder Man might have opened a path for Cloak & Dagger to officially become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe without changing its original story. That’s a common way things become official within the MCU – quietly and gradually.
