As a passionate cinephile with a penchant for films that tug at my heartstrings and leave me in awe of human resilience, I am thrilled about Disney+ Latin America securing distribution rights for “Dancing in the Ring.” The blend of boxing, dance, romance, and historical context promises an extraordinary cinematic experience.
The streaming service, Disney+ Latin America, has secured the distribution privileges for the Chilean boxing movie titled “Dancing in the Ring,” which was co-written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Gonzalo Maza (“A Fantastic Woman”) and Rodrigo Gijón (“Infieles”).
Under the direction of Rodrigo Sepulveda, who previously worked on “My Tender Matador”, the film is being shot in Chile and focuses on the life story of Arturo Godoy, the renowned Chilean boxer who fought against world heavyweight champion Joe Louis. The cast includes Marko Zaror, known for his role in “John Wick: Chapter 4”, and Benjamín Vicuña, from “Envious” and “Vis a Vis”. Uriah Hall, a former UFC champion, is portraying Louis, also known as The Brown Bomber.
As a dedicated movie critic, I wholeheartedly appreciate the captivating narrative this film presents. I firmly believe it possesses the ability to resonate deeply within our community and spark meaningful conversations. That’s why I am thrilled to announce that we are wholeheartedly backing its distribution. A theatrical release has been arranged to ensure this masterpiece receives the limelight it truly deserves, shining brightly for all to witness.
In 1940, amid the tumultuous backdrop of World War II, I find myself drawn into the captivating tale of “Dancing in the Ring.” I, Godoy, embark on an ambitious journey, venturing into the city to take on Louis for the heavyweight title. Simultaneously, Leda Urbinati (portrayed by Fiorella Bottaioli), a gifted dancer, embarks on her own ambitious journey, striving to conquer Broadway. Our shared passions for ambition and dance kindle a romance, yet our paths are fraught with challenges and obstacles that test our resolve.
Godoy’s career soars following victories over Firpo and Tony Galento, securing him a title shot. Meanwhile, Urbinati finds success with the assistance of promoter Gabriel Meredith (Vicuña), whose increasing connection with her ignites jealousy in Godoy. As personal conflicts jeopardize their relationships and aspirations, both Godoy and Meredith must put aside their disputes to strive for greatness.
The main producer of the movie, Max Gandarillas, obtained the permission to use ‘Dying for My Sweet Homeland’ – a book written by Roberto Castillo – as the basis for the biographical film.
In addition to producing various movies like “The Memory of Water” by Matias Bize, Vicuña is now taking on the role of an executive producer as well.
Sepúlveda stated: “Telling this epic tale, where Arturo Godoy journeys to New York in 1940 to strive for the world championship, is no small feat. Dancing and an indestructible friendship are his sole allies in this endeavor. These aspects transform this narrative into an extraordinary and heartwarming one, both in story and on screen.
Chilean martial artist and actor Zaror, renowned for his striking physique, garnered global attention with his role as Chidi in “John Wick: Chapter 4.” He has additionally appeared in action films such as Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete Kills” and “Undisputed III: Redemption.” Beyond portraying the main character Godoy, Zaror also takes on the role of the film’s fight choreographer.
