Disney Hires YouTube, Meta Veteran Andre Rohe to Lead Product Engineering for Entertainment Division and ESPN

Andre Rohe, with a background in senior engineering positions at Meta, YouTube, and Google, is now tasked with managing a unified product engineering team within the Disney Entertainment and ESPN Technology division, which has recently been established.

Rohe now reports directly to Adam Smith, who took up the role as Chief Product and Technology Officer for Disney Entertainment and ESPN last September. The new team led by Rohe brings together numerous product squads from both Disney and ESPN, creating a consolidated unit focused on developing digital products and platforms that cater to entertainment and sports properties.

After over twenty years of managing engineering teams at companies like Meta, YouTube, Google, and Tabula, Rohe moves on to Disney Entertainment and ESPN. During this time, he has been instrumental in projects involving recommendations, personalization, AI, machine learning, big data, and more, across fields such as news, entertainment, video, and beyond.

As a seasoned movie critic who’s no stranger to the digital realm, I must confess that the duo behind this cinematic masterpiece, Rohe and Smith, have an impressive resume in the tech world. Specifically, Smith boasts a 20-year tenure at YouTube and Google, most recently holding the esteemed position of Vice President of Product Management at YouTube.

Smith praised Andre as a highly skilled technologist with a rich background in managing top-tier engineering teams, specializing in large-scale recommendation and product personalization,” he stated upon hiring Rohe. “Andre’s collaborative nature makes him an ideal fit for Disney and ESPN. He will lead a remarkable team and work alongside other tech experts in our media ventures. His expertise and leadership will bolster our ability to innovate and increase the global influence of our products.

Rohe expressed in a release: “Disney is an exceptional organization, impacting countless lives, including my own. It’s thrilling to join forces with Adam again, and I feel profoundly honored to guide this talented group of engineers as we strive to innovate the way people worldwide experience entertainment and sports.

Most recently, he served as the Vice President of Engineering at Meta, focusing on Feed, Recommendation, Reels ranking, Facebook videos, Search, and more from October 2021 until March 2023. He then chose to step down from Meta for a sabbatical and embark on worldwide travels with his spouse.

Before joining Meta, Dr. Rohe spent six years at YouTube, serving as Vice President of Engineering and overseeing the team responsible for all video platform recommendations. Prior to this role, he was with Google, where he managed engineering and product development for Google News, and growth and ranking functions within the social product sector. He earned his Ph.D. in Discrete Mathematics from the University of Bonn in Germany.
