As a long-time fan of Star Wars and a supporter of diverse storytelling, I find myself both saddened and frustrated by the cancellation of “The Acolyte.” While it’s understandable that Disney needs to make business decisions based on financial performance, the cost-benefit analysis for this series seems flawed.

A Disney exec has revealed why “The Acolyte” was canceled after just one season.

During an interview with Vulture, Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, shared that although “The Acolyte” had a successful one-season premiere on Disney+, its performance didn’t quite meet the required level to warrant a second season due to the high production costs.

Bergman stated that while we were content with our show’s performance, it didn’t meet the required level considering the cost structure of the series. In simple terms, it wasn’t financially viable to produce a second season. That’s why we chose not to move forward with it.

After the termination of the series “Acolyte”, Amandla Stenberg, its main star, shared a 8-and-a-half-minute video on her Instagram Stories expressing that she wasn’t shocked by Disney not renewing it due to the intense criticism online towards the show’s female-centric narrative and hints of queer themes.

Stenberg remarked, ‘It wasn’t entirely unexpected for me,’ since the show was introduced in 2020. Since then, she continued, we’ve faced an intense wave of what I would call extreme conservative hostility, verbal abuse, bias, hate, and offensive speech.

Disney’s newest show set in a distant galaxy, “Skeleton Crew,” has shown positive signs of development, as suggested by Bergman, who is optimistic that the series starring Jude Law will perform well given the outstanding reviews it has received following its debut on December 2.

Despite not providing many details, Bergman hinted at potential second seasons for “Andor,” “Ahsoka,” and several other Star Wars series that are currently being considered.

Speaking about the future, we’ve got “Andor” season two on the horizon and we can hardly wait! It’s superb, trust me, I’ve seen every episode, and this season is exceptional. Additionally, there’s “Ahsoka” season two, helmed by Dave Filoni. Moreover, we have several other series in development, but we’ll make a decision on those later. As I mentioned before, they need to be amazing.
